Director of MW X Country/ Track and Field Coach

 

The Athletics Department at Whittier College is seeking an Director of MW X Country/ Track and Field Coach. A Head Coach within the Whittier College athletic program will be responsible to organize and direct all aspects of an NCAA Division III program.  The Director of X Country and Track and Field will report to the Executive Director of Athletics for all matters related to the program and will work closely with Admissions, faculty, administration, and staff to help advance Whittier College athletics.  This position shall be responsible for providing a positive environment for its student-athletes to succeed socially, academically, and in competition. The program will be a part of the NCAA and will function as a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). This position is instrumental in determining the foundation and direction of the program.

Exempt Status: Exempt

Full Time/Part Time status: Full Time

Salary Range: $66,560.00-$70,000 annually; Salary will commensurate with experience, skills, and knowledge.

POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

• Manage day to day activities of an NCAA Division III Men & Women’s X Country and Track Programs.

• Organize and direct all aspects of an NCAA Division III program.

• Must work effectively with the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and administration. 

• Stay in compliance with Whittier, SCIAC and NCAA DIII policies, procedures & regulations.

• Budget Preparation and Management.

• Schedules all pre-season and game contests.

• Arranges travel and supervision while on traveling events.

• Attend and organize all practices and games.

• Scouting and preparation of opponents.

• Responsible for the recruitment of academically qualified and eligible prospective student-athletes.

• Monitors academic progress of the program’s student-athletes and their retention.

• Establish and maintain relationships with regional and national coaching organizations and associations.

• Oversees all pre-season conditioning and non traditional  season activities.

• Organizes all team fundraising models in conjunction with the Executive Director of Athletics.

• Collaborate with University Advancement relating to fundraising initiatives.

• Organizes, administrates, and develops a competitive program within the conference and the NCAA.

• Provides end of season documentation as required by the department.

• On a monthly basis, keeps the Executive Director of Athletics informed about his/her program.

• Supports the philosophy, goals and the mission of the athletic department and the university as well as adheres to departmental, university and NCAA policies and procedures.

• Have a presence within the office on all business days.

• Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Athletics.

 

 

Essential Functions of the Job:

• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

• Demonstrate ability to teach, motivate and develop student-athletes.

• Serve as Event Day manager for athletic contests as assigned.

• Participate actively in campus events and on College committees to support the University community and provide a leadership presence.

• Must be a person of high integrity with high educational standards while exhibiting a strict adherence to NCAA, conference, university and department rules and regulations as well as a solid commitment to academic, student-athletes welfare, ethnic diversity and gender equity.

• Market, manage and instruct youth camps, clinics and community engagement efforts in summer and throughout the academic year.

 

 

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:        

Knowledge and Education:  Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.  Minimum three years of successful coaching experience along with playing experience is preferred.  Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills are essential.
