Head Women's Basketball Coach

The Head Women’s Basketball Coach is responsible for the leadership, organization, and overall success of the women’s basketball program. This role provides strategic direction in coaching, recruiting, player development, and program administration while fostering a culture of academic excellence, integrity, sportsmanship, and competitive success. The Head Coach will oversee all aspects of the program, including staff supervision, compliance with institutional and conference regulations, and the holistic development of student-athletes.

Essential Functions:

The statements below are intended to describe the principal duties of the person or persons assigned to this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties and responsibilities.

  • Manages and directs the women’s basketball program.

  • Coaches the women’s basketball team.

  • Manages all aspects of the team including, practicing, competing, organizing travel logistics, ensuring athletes follow NCAA and conference guidelines, and scheduling. 

  • Evaluates and recruits qualified student-athletes. 

  • Directs and supervises the assistant women’s basketball coach. 

  • Scouts opponents. 

  • Manages a fiscally sound budget (e.g., no exceeding the budget without written approval).

  • Directs the assistant women’s basketball coach in coordinating study hall and tutoring.

  • Monitors class schedules, grades and student-athlete academic progress.

  • Ensures that appropriate rules and regulations regarding the conduct and eligibility of athletic activities and athletes are explained and followed.

  • Ensures that student athletes follow a standard of conduct that aligns with the core values of the College.

  • Responsible for women’s basketball and golf student-athlete retention. 

  • Responsible for marketing and promoting of the women’s basketball program.

  • Serves as the director of women’s basketball summer camps.

  • Assists the administration with alumni relations including but not limited to hosting events, traveling for donor stewardship).

  • Commits to and is responsible for adhering to all rules and regulations set forth for the team, the College, SLIAC, UMAC, and the NCAA with the utmost integrity.

  • Works cooperatively with personnel in the athletics department, attends department meetings and activities, and always represents the College positively when interacting with the community, alumni, high school and club coaches, media and general public.

  • Completes other assigned administrative duties in a timely manner.

  • Responsible for establishing job standards for subordinate staff and effectively evaluating staff under charge. 

  • Engages in regular consultation with athletic training, sports performance, and other sport department personnel to maximize the safety and wellness of student-athletes and demonstrates concern for the overall welfare of students at all times. 

  • Serve as the game manager and lead game management logistics in other sports is required.

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree required; master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Three years of demonstrated successful coaching experience at the high school or college level (NCAA D3 college level and above preferred). Commitment to attend all scheduled practices and games. Collegiate coaching is preferred. Experience working with diverse populations. Experience contributing to campus diversity efforts. 

Skills:

  • Ability to recruit, coach and teach highly talented student-athletes. 

  • Ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the College, SLIAC, UMAC and the NCAA. 

  • Ability to hire and supervise qualified assistants and student workers. 

  • Ability to market and promote.

  • A proven record in following directives and being responsible for tasks which have been assigned.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment as needed. 

  • Ability to attend seminars, meetings and other professional development opportunities at or away from the College.

  • Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives and exercise independent judgment based on an understanding of organizational policies and activities. 

  • Ability to integrate resources, policies, and information for the determination of procedures, solutions, and other outcomes. 

  • Knowledge of management methods and ability to provide administrative guidance within area of responsibility and provide direct training and supervision as needed. 

  • Ability to apply budgeting and fiscal planning techniques within financial constraints. 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public. 

  • Ability to communicate effectively - orally, by phone, in person, and in writing. 

  • Ability to respond to emergency situations in a timely manner. 

  • Ability to represent the department and College in a friendly, courteous and professional manner. 

  • Ability to use a personal computer and other office equipment.
