The department of Athletics at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Assistant Director, Big Screen Productions.

About the Opportunity

The Assistant Director, Big Screen Productions is responsible for creating videos for in-game entertainment and marketing. Incumbent operates the equipment to display videos, sound, and LED advertising at all Athletics venues with videoboards. This position recruits student employees, helps train them, and assigns workers for videoboard events and ESPN+ broadcasts.

What You'll Do

  • Provides Leadership for projects with Athletics Marketing: Oversees all content (both live and edited) for all Athletics Videoboards across campus. Produces, Directs, Shoots, and Edits content for all sports that utilize a videoboard. Works with individual teams/ Communications Directors regarding specific scoring needs for the videoboards. Represents Athletics Video at all Athletics Marketing Meetings, including accepting and assigning projects based on need.

  • Primary Producer for Sponsored Content on Videoboards: Responsible for oversite of content with our Mountaineer Sports Properties/ Learfield partner. These include sponsored video replays, sponsored content during “Moments of Domination,” sponsored advertising rotation, in-game fan engagement and any other sponsored content as dictated by the above entities. Assists in Developing Ideas. Creates and Produces Sponsored Content in conjunction with Mountaineer Sports Properties or programs sold/ assigned by Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Affairs.

  • Lead Supervisor for Student Recruitment/ Training/ Scheduling: Serves at the Primary Recruiter, trainer and liaison for student workers for Athletics Video Productions. These students will work on videoboard productions, press conferences, and/ or ESPN Broadcasts. Works with Assistant Athletics Director to assign both students and local professionals for live events approximately 100 times per year. Maintains payroll database and submits payroll for videoboard workers.

  • Writing, Producing, and Directing: Responsible for writing, producing and editing video projects for the WVU Athletic Department, including, but not limited to the items listed above.

  • Crewing and Assisting: Assists other producers and staff members on projects that support the needs of the Athletic Department.
    Other Duties As Assigned: Includes, but not limited to: Providing assistance to digital media staff, leading tours of perspective student-athletes or prospective students in communications, recommending equipment purchases, serving on committees, archiving digital files, completing individual activity reports and working with Production Manager to ensure equipment is maintained and in good working order. May also include researching equipment, working on special projects for the Athletic Department, delivery or pick up of supplies, materials, - or other production elements. Other duties as assigned or deemed necessary to provide quality video production services to the Athletic Department and our fans, donors, and alumni.
     

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in digital media, television production, communication arts or related occupational field.

  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience involving:

    • Producing, directing, shooting and editing high quality programming in a recognized, video production facility is required. Experience must include use of Venue Control systems that operate multiple LED screens simultaneously.

    • Utilizing live and pre-recorded techniques.

  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.

  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
     

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of sophisticated aspects of video production techniques, aesthetics, and theory.

  • Knowledge of basic and advanced principles as they relate to live and recorded program production.

  • Operational knowledge of computers and/or computer-based video editing and graphic systems.

  • Knowledge of various sports, the rules for play, and an understanding of basic strategies for those sports.

  • Knowledge of new media and internet distribution opportunities.

SKILLS

  • Demonstrated operation with Venue Control Systems similar to Chyron Prime Click Effects or Ross Unified Venue Control Solutions.

  • Demonstrated skills in producing and editing a quality video as evidenced through the submission of a sample reel for the interview process.

  • Demonstrated experience with motion graphics, specifically using Adobe AfterEffects.

  • Demonstrated vidography skills using current cinematic cameras with interchangeable lenses.

  • Oral and written communication skills, including strong interpersonal skills.

  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Effective time management skills.

ABILITIES

  • Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of professional video production equipment; including Venue Control Systems, broadcast video cameras, DSLR cameras, microphones, non-linear editing systems, and multi-camera production/ webcasting units (with a preference for experience with Newtek Tricaster switchers).

  • Demonstrated ability to critically listen to music and sound effects.

  • Ability to work additional hours and/or a flexible schedule as needed; such as evenings, early mornings or weekends to accommodate client schedules, events or to alleviate the demand on equipment.

  • Ability to communicate clear directions to crew.

  • Ability to lead a production team or serve as a team member in a subservient role.

  • Ability to take initiative and meet project deadlines.

  • Ability to creatively edit a variety of video and audio production elements to create a finished program within established guidelines and to the client’s satisfaction.

  • Ability to formulate concepts to plan, develop and implement live and/or pre-recorded video programs.

  • Ability to critically analyze video elements and creatively combine them into an edited video program.

  • Ability to create and edit written materials.

  • Ability to technically understand the electronics and aesthetics of studio or field video production.

  • Ability to lead projects and make independent decisions.

 

Requirements 

Physical Demands & Physical Coordination

  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds regularly - and up to 100 pounds occasionally.

  • Carrying and lifting heavy and cumbersome broadcast equipment.

  • Must require strength in arms for pulling and stretching coiling cables

  • May need to be in a squatting or crouching position in order to shoot certain events

  • Candidate must be able to climb stairways at Hope Coliseum to reach Control Room to Produce live events.

  • May stand for long periods of time during production shoots
