Job Description Summary

Provides academic counseling and support in areas of course oversight, registration procedures, progress toward degree requirements, and career planning for student-athletes in designated sports within Wake Forest University. Responsible for coordinating the athletics admissions screening process and ensuring that all NCAA eligibility requirements and Wake Forest University admission requirements for transfer prospective student-athletes are met.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

Major Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for working with prospective transfer student-athletes through the Wake Forest transfer admission process.

  • Evaluate transcripts for transfer students and communicate with the appropriate Student-Athlete Services counselor on progress-toward-degree requirements.

  • Communicate with coaches and academic and compliance staff daily regarding any potential deficiencies, challenges or developments with a prospective student-athlete’s case.

  • Assist the Assistant Director of Eligibility in maintaining the admissions spreadsheet, ensuring accuracy based on recruitment status, and completing academic reads for prospective student-athletes in ARMS.

  • Provides academic counseling for student-athletes and teams as assigned.

  • Monitors academic performance and prepares academic reports for designated sports.

  • Develops individualized academic support plans for student-athletes and provides one-on-one academic assistance as needed.

  • Develops strong working relationships to emphasize the value of education and the development of self-reliance.

  • Assists compliance and certifying officer in the NCAA with certification and tracking process.

  • Recommends and nominates student-athletes for awards and scholarships.

  • Responsible for academic meetings with recruits for assigned sports.

  • Maintains open and consistent contact with coaches, athletic counselors, faculty and University support staff.

  • Assists with recruiting weekends and new student-athlete orientation activities.

  • Adhere to and enforces all Departmental policies and procedures, as well as rules and regulations of the University, the ACC, the NCAA and other authorities that may legitimately influence programs. Maintains current knowledge of trends and changes related to compliance in intercollegiate athletics

  • Maintains current working knowledge of academic eligibility rules and procedures of the University, ACC and NCAA.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Working knowledge of NCAA academic eligibility and recruiting rules and procedures.

  • Ability to lead and guide Division I student-athletes in their pursuit of a college degree.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ability to demonstrate organizational and time management skills.

  • Ability to work weekend and evening hours as needed.

Education, Experience, Training

Bachelor’s degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 2-5 years experience at the Division I level in Compliance, University Admissions, or University Registrar’s Office.

Masters degree or experience in NCAA Division I campus athletics compliance office preferred.

Accountabilities

Reports weekly to the Sr. Associate AD/ Director of Student-Athlete Services.

Accountable for adhering to ACC, NCAA and Wake Forest policies and regulations.
