The Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia is now accepting applications for the position of Assistant Director of Athletic Communications to support the Media Relations office.
The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications position exists to provide support for the athletics communications, media relations, storytelling, and branding needs of the Athletics Department and assigned sport programs. The position will be the primary contact for baseball and volleyball. In addition to general communications and media relations provided for sport programs, the position is responsible for supporting assigned programs in image and brand building to positively impact and elevate the Virginia Athletics brand. This position will also develop and execute long-term strategic digital communications for assigned programs. The position will oversee the creation of graphics, photography assets and video projects for both content creation and branding purposes on digital platforms and social media channels. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: exemplary customer service to internal and external constituencies; planning and directing the communication of information through news releases, photography, creative video, social media outlets, other electronic means and personal contact; working with media representatives at the local, state and national level; event management; supervising student assistants and creating, designing and writing creative content (digital and print) for assigned sports.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of sports programs (baseball and volleyball) with the ability to prepare written reports on sport programs so that they are grammatically correct and of professional quality.
Demonstrated knowledge of graphics design, photography, videography, digital editing, desktop publishing, social media, and the operation of statistical computer programs.
Ability to convey information, and/or plans clearly in written format.
Ability to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills in interactions with all UVA and Athletics Department staff, outside community including fans, visitors, the press, prospective students, parents, and other constituencies.
Must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to supervise student workers.
Ability to present a professional demeanor and maintain confidentiality while delivering a high level of internal and external customer service.
Computer Applications: Some knowledge of computers and software: Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, social media applications, and statistical programs.
Required Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor's degree is required, preferably with a major/minor in English, journalism or communications.
Experience: One year of athletics communications experience or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
Education: Master's Degree.
Experience: 4+ years of related experience in athletics communications. Experience with Division I level baseball and volleyball and other Olympic sports.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Familiarity with NCAA and ACC rules and regulations, graphics design, photography and videography.
Computer Applications: Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite applications, social media applications, and Genius statistical programs.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $50,000 - $55,000 dependent upon qualifications.
