ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The USF Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is an integral part of USF and its mission by sponsoring a diverse and nationally competitive Division I athletic program. The program serves several significant constituencies, including its student-athletes, who are students first. The most important priority of the program is the progress of the student-athletes toward graduation. Other priorities include the health, fitness and emotional development of student-athletes at USF.
Intercollegiate Athletics provide a sense of collegiality, allegiance, and pride for students, staff, faculty, alumni, boosters and the greater Tampa Bay community at large and serves as a focal point for their support. Within the framework of competitive excellence, Intercollegiate Athletics at USF are also a contact vehicle leading supporters to a greater awareness of the University's mission, academic programs and prominence as an educational institution.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is housed in the athletics external relations department and reports to the associate director of communications. The candidate administers all communications, media relations and social media functions for assigned USF's sports programs. The assistant director will be responsible for overseeing two sports (sport assignments will be determined and discussed with candidates during the interview process).
The candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment within the external department to advance the brand of USF Athletics and the university collaborating with marketing, branding & content team and the ticket & sales office. Works independently to generate media coverage of assigned sports, developing stories and assets for television and print/digital media. Utilization of social media channels will also be a large focus. In charge of historical documentation and statistics for assigned sports. Adheres to all NCAA, Conference, and institutional rules and regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Writes, edit sand distributes press releases, game stories, game notes, media guides and other pertinent written materials and ensure accurate and timely updating of sports pages on athletics website GoUSFBulls.com. Nominate and promote student-athletes for awards. Maintains accurate historical records, biographies and statistics and coordinate the keeping of in-game statistics for designated sports.
Plans, coordinates and supervises game day media functions and credentialing of staff and media for designated sports. Works with head coach, coaching staff and student-athletes to prepare them for successful media interactions and social media use. Develop stories for external media outlets. Teachers and mentors student interns to supplement game day and weekly duties and develops their professional readiness.
Lead creative and engaging social media efforts to project the USF brand for athletics programs, working closely with the branding & content team (graphic design/video production) to ideate and produce graphics, GIF's and video. Create and execute monthly content calendar plans for social media channels.
Cultivates and expands awareness, affinity, and support for the university and its athletic programs through strategic communications and public relations. Builds relationships and regularly communicates with local, regional and national media outlets to facilitate coverage of athletic programs.
Assists in coordination of photo shoots; assists in game day duties for USF FB and occasionally USF basketball, executes some office manager duties; interface with other athletics dept, university personnel and external publics and creates positive and productive relationships.
Performs other duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:
This position requires a Bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, public relations, technical writing, digital media, or related field, with two years of experience in related positions; or a Master's degree in the fields listed above. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.
FLSB1310 Equivalency:
4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.
6 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for master's degree.
PREFERRED:
Preferred three years of relevant experience in collegiate or professional athletics; or a Masters degree plus one year relevant experience in collegiate or professional athletics
