Sports Dietitian, Basketball
The department of Athletics at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified Sports Dietitian for men’s and women’s basketball. The Sports Dietitian provides individual and group/team nutrition counseling and education to enhance the performance of student-athletes, on-site and during travel. Primary responsibilities include execution of nutrition services for men’s and women’s basketball such as pre/post-practice fueling, recovery, and hydration, counseling individuals and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations; tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition services, serving as a food and nutrition resource for coaches, athletic trainers, and parents; working closely with foodservice and catering staff to develop and execute training table menu, budgeting, nutrition education, nutrition marketing, and related programming; and maintain professional competency and skills required for professional practice. The individual reports directly to the Assistant Athletic Director for Performance Nutrition.

Primary responsibilities include counseling individuals and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations; tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition services, serving as a food and nutrition resource for coaches, athletic trainers, strength coaches, and parents. Providing sports nutrition education for health/wellness, performance, and NCAA anti-doping policies to student-athletes, coaches, and staff; and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice.
Essential Functions
The individual will assess and analyze dietary practice, body composition, and energy expenditure of athletes in the context of athletic performance and health. Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training, competition, recovery, hydration, travel, and supplementation. The individual will provide personalized meal and snack plans to promote achieving short- and long-term goals for athletic performance and good health. Provides medical nutrition therapy, as needed to help manage or treat medical conditions and coordinates nutritional care as a member of a multidisciplinary sports medicine team. Supervises, educates, and mentors dietetic interns, student workers, employees, and others as appropriate. Develop and deliver nutrition education presentations, demonstrations, or events on various topics related to nutrition for performance. Plans menus for training table and team travel. Recommends appropriate pre-, during, and post-exercise fluids and snacks for training and competition. Serves as a nutrition resource for coaches, athletic trainers, food service professionals, and parents. Assist in coordinating and managing the quantity and distribution of food production, such as developing training table menus and catering. Coordinates nutrition for domestic and/or international travel during competition for individuals and teams. Develops and delivers nutrition education to food service personnel. Maintains dietetic registration and continuing education requirements. Stays abreast of current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition.
Physical Effort
Desk work, computer work, phone work, attending meetings, & athletic department events. The position is mostly sedentary; however, individual is required to attend several athletic department games and events and may be required to walk and stand for long periods of time.
