Deputy Athletic Director

The Deputy Athletic Director will provide strategic leadership and oversight of Internal Operation efforts for the Athletic Department. This position will work alongside the Director of Athletics to ensure Athletic Department internal operations are efficient and effective and align with the department’s goals and mission, as well as the strategic plans of both Athletics and the University, while maximizing financial resources. The Deputy Athletic Director serves as a senior advisor to the Director of Athletics, oversees major departments within Athletics, leads multiple teams of people, initiatives and projects and will manage other senior leaders in the Athletic Department. This position serves as liaison between internal and external stakeholders and fosters key relationships on behalf of the Athletic Department. The Deputy Athletic Director must have the ability to understand, interact with and effectively organize and manage individuals and teams of people, recognizing their strengths, motivations and potential challenges, and the ability to foster a positive work environment to achieve optimal performance. The individual must have critical thinking skills, including, but not limited to the ability to encourage and promote creativity, open-mindedness, curiosity, and collaborative productivity among team members, utilize and analyze data, recognize problems and identify optimal solutions, all while focusing on reaching and/or exceeding goals. 

Job Summary

Serves as a senior advisor to the athletic director and athletics department and leads in the development and advancement of strategic priorities and management. Oversees major departments within athletics and leads multiple teams, initiatives and projects. Serves as liaison between internal and external stakeholders and fosters key relationships on behalf of the athletic department. Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures and regulations.

Essential Functions 

Responsible for leading internal operation efforts for the Athletic Department as determined by the Director of Athletics. Develops effective relationships across the University and external to the University to assist in development and advancement of executive level responsibilities. Develops and implements strategic short-term and long-term planning for various units within the Athletic Department. Develops, monitors and maintains budgets for various units. Creates and fosters relations with coaches and other athletic staff including executive team members. Manages, oversees and directs projects from inception to completion. Supervises staff, including hiring, distributing and reviewing work, performance reviews, and documenting disciplinary actions and other human resource administration. Provides and encourages professional development opportunities and manages work schedules for staff. Ability to interpret, apply and steward University of Pittsburgh athletic brand. Serves as a key liaison with senior university leaders, fostering alignment between Athletics and the broader institutional mission. Other duties as assigned by Director of Athletics.
