Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director’s Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department’s guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.

Position Summary

The Director of Communications and Content Creation for Women’s Basketball and Field Hockey reports to the Sr. Assoc. Ath Dir,-Ext. Affairs /Strat. Communications/Women’s Basketball administrator. Serves as the communications advisor to the head coaches of those sports, providing expert input and guidance on all external-facing statements, social media presence, news releases, video, and other communications. The position will manage the head coaches’ and student-athletes’ media requests and serve as the lead spokesperson for those sports with the authority to issue statements and post to social media on behalf of those teams. Will direct and lead brand management meetings for those teams, focusing on reach, generating revenue through ticket sales and marketing, and recruiting. Will focus on digital content creation with the goal of telling the best stories of those programs, as well as producing game notes and media guides, ensuring stats productions and records are recorded, directing media credentialing and press box organization. Will direct and oversee the development and execution of strategy, content, planning and analytical insights of all areas of social media for assigned teams. Will attend events and practices, creating content for social media and the web while setting up appropriate media interviews and service. Will travel with the Women’s Basketball team to 15-20 games per year and Field Hockey team to 5-10 games per year. Will work with media to pitch story ideas and set up interviews, and will provide media training to student-athletes in those sports. This position has the oversight and authority to direct the Media Relations Student Program, including recruiting students, assigning duties, editing and mentoring. Will work closely with others in External Communications to promote and protect the Carolina brand.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Substantial experience working in athletics communications with college athletics. Strength across creative disciplines with industry expertise in one or more to include writing, editing, graphics and storytelling skills. Strong creative skills required. Ability to lead a creative team – understand how to engage, motivate and support creative personalities. Understand how to support recruiting needs of sport programs – content that resonates with appropriate channels. Exceptional communication, leadership and organizational skills. Valid driver’s license required.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Prefer 7 or more years’ experience in an athletics communications position with college athletics. Prefer experience that includes working with high-profile leaders. Cross-discipline experience between external roles to include athletic communications, marketing and creative services. Experience managing communications and creative services employees (both direct and indirect). Work experience directly related to area of employment.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements

Must be able to lift/move 25 lbs or greater. May be required to navigate stairs. Attention to detail essential. Must be able to manage a fast-paced, high-volume work environment. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
