Associate General Counsel

This is a full-time staff attorney position in the Office of the Vice President & General Counsel of the University of Nebraska. The Office of the Vice President & General Counsel is administratively responsible for all legal matters affecting the University of Nebraska and provides legal services to the Board of Regents, the President, the Chancellors, administrative officers, and others on the four campuses of the University system and within the Office of the President.

This position is located in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the City Campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). Duties and responsibilities of this position will involve principally supporting the strategic and operational needs of Nebraska Athletics under the direction of the Vice President and General Counsel, with an expected emphasis on sports law matters, including reviewing, drafting and negotiating agreements related to competitions, sponsorships/commercial partnerships, naming rights, facility use, vendors, media rights, and coach employment; counseling on student-athlete related issues, including name, image, and likeness (NIL) activities; managing an active litigation docket, including responding to discovery requests, and supervising outside counsel on litigation matters; monitoring evolving legislation and legal matters that may affect collegiate athletics; and supporting the University’s strategic and operational goals with respect to the evolving landscape of Division I collegiate athletics. Salary will be commensurate with experience and credentials, plus benefits. The successful candidate will be required to complete a criminal background check.

Required Qualifications: A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience as a practicing attorney. B.A. / B.S. plus an earned J.D. degree from an accredited law school. Member in good standing of the State Bar of Nebraska or permitted to be admitted in Nebraska under Nebraska Court Rule section 3-119 as a Class 1-B applicant within one year following the hiring date.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience at another institution of higher education, public employer, non-profit entity, or law firm specifically working in those areas of practice identified above; experience with collegiate or professional athletics, including a working knowledge of the financial and operational goals of a Division I collegiate athletics program; prior experience working with sports agents or managers; and experience in regulatory analysis and a strong understanding of NCAA regulations and compliance requirements.
