Summary
The Director of Compliance for Eligibility will support several areas related to eligibility and recruiting and will have primary responsibility for managing the continuing, transfer and initial eligibility process, including keeping coaches, admissions, academic support and related staff informed as to the academic status of current and incoming student-athletes. The Director of Compliance for Eligibility will also have a thorough understanding of NCAA and Big Ten rules, and UM policies and programs.
The Director of Compliance for Eligibility will convey a strong customer service attitude and assist coaches, student-athletes and athletic administrators with issues related to NCAA, Big Ten and institutional rules and policies. This individual will consistently and reliably demonstrate good judgment, a commitment to high ethical standards, sound reasoning, and practicality.
Responsibilities*
- Oversee continuing eligibility of student-athletes
- Liaison to Registrar's Office and college and unit degree audit personnel.
- Verify academic eligibility of continuing student-athletes based on NCAA and Big Ten eligibility requirements.
- Prepare and submit eligibility lists to the Big Ten Conference office using an approved format.
- Interpret NCAA and Big Ten eligibility requirements and advise student-athletes, academic staff and coaches.
- Monitor full-time enrollment status of student-athletes
- Oversee transfer eligibility for incoming transfers and completion/coordination of Transfer Portal documentation for incoming and departing transfers
- Respond to requests for transfer information for departing transfers.
- Assess eligibility of incoming transfer student-athletes based on NCAA and Big Ten rules.
- Oversight of initial eligibility issues and work with Admissions Office on issues of initial eligibility.
- Help communicate issues with coaches and Admissions Office regarding amateurism clearinghouse review process.
- Liaison with NCAA Eligibility Center.
- Prepare and submit waivers as required.
- Prepare well-written, persuasive arguments to support waiver requests being filed on behalf of student-athletes in areas such as Initial Eligibility, Progress Towards Degree and Athletics Activity waivers.
- Assist with academic data collection and reporting
- Serve as liaison with Registrar?s Office for reporting of APR/GSR data.
- Tracking student-athlete grade changes for review by the Faculty Athletics Representative.
- Other data collection and review as requested.
- Be a compliance liaison to multiple sport programs as assigned.
- Assist with the development of rules education programming for student-athletes, staff and coaches.
- Investigate possible violations of NCAA rules and draft violation reports, as assigned.
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Associate Athletic Director or Assistant Athletic Director.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's Degree
- 2 - 4 years of full-time compliance experience in a Division I athletics program
- Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA rules
- Commitment to high professional ethical standards
- Commitment to building and maintaining an inclusive work environment
- Interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate information to a range of audiences
- Verbal and written communications skills.
Desired Qualifications*
- Master's Degree, law or other relevant advanced degree
- Demonstrated knowledge of Big Ten rules
- Previous experience in a BCS-level athletics program
