Head Coach, Track & Field

POSITION SUMMARY:

The University of Memphis, an NCAA Division I institution located in Memphis, Tennessee, is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to serve as the Head Coach for Track & Field. The Head Coach will be responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the athletic program, including but not limited to recruiting, coaching, mentoring student-athletes, developing training plans, organizing competitions, managing the budget, and ensuring compliance with NCAA and university policies. This position requires an individual committed to academic excellence, health and safety, personal and professional development of all track & field students and coaches and competing at a championship level.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

•Perform duties related to administering, managing, and leading of a NCAA Division I

track & field program in accordance with the University’s stated mission and in conformance with the American Athletic Conference, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules and regulations.

o Hire, lead, and hold assistant coaches and other support staff accountable for their required duties on and off the track as outlined by the NCAA manual.

o Monitor the health and safety of all student-athletes in their academic, athletic, and personal development.

o Collaborate with assistant coaches, athletic trainers, and other staff to support student-athletes’ well-being.

o Monitor compliance with all institutional rules and regulations, including but not limited to the Office of Civil Rights, Human Resources, and Student Affairs.

o Maintain and cultivate effective relations with governing boards, associations, conferences, committees, institutional alumni, the media, the public, students, faculty, staff, and friends of the University with respect to the Track & field program.

o Hire qualified staff, manage their professional development, and hold them accountable to Departmental, University, and NCAA rules and regulations.

o Attend and participate in department and staff meetings and events.

o Represent the University of Memphis in a positive manner at any events on or off campus through community outreach, and public speaking engagements.

o Be knowledgeable of and fully comply with all appropriate rules and regulations

of the University of Memphis, the American Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

Administration (Budget, Fundraising, & Human Resources)

• Operate within the confines of the allocated budget as directed by the Athletic Director

(or designee).

o Schedule all practices, games, and team travel.

o Manage the program with the parameters of an approved budget.

o Develop and participate in fund-raising activities for the program and department.

Recruiting & Teaching

• Recruit and develop student-athletes who will successfully represent the institution academically, athletically, and within the Memphis community. Teach mechanics and

techniques of track & field to team members, coaching them in a cohesive manner for team

and individual improvement.

o Oversee the academic progress and development of student-athletes with an

emphasis on progress towards graduation.

o Oversee all aspects of preseason, regular, and post-season practices and meet

preparation by conducting skill, technique, mental and physical training to prepare

for the highest levels of competition.

o Organize and implement a successful recruiting program to attract outstanding

student-athletes to attend the University of Memphis.

o Be knowledgeable of and fully comply with all appropriate rules and regulations of

the University of Memphis, the American Athletic Conference, and the NCAA

o Abide by rules and regulations of the NCAA and Division I with respect to the administration of the University’s athletic program.

o Conduct oneself in an ethical manner in association with the expectations of the position and as a member of the University of Memphis community.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor's degree.

• Minimum six years of track & field coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level.

• Significant knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.

• History of recruiting academically successful student-athletes.

• Thorough knowledge of and commitment with rules and policies of the University of Memphis, American Athletic Conference, and the NCAA,

• Ability to establish a good rapport and effective working relationship with student-athletes, other coaches, administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, fans, and the public.

• Proven administrative, organizational, and recruiting skills.

• Ability to work flexible hours including nights, weekend and travel as needed.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master's degree in an applicable field.

• Eight years of collegiate head coach experience.
