Softball Assistant Coach

Position Summary

The Kansas Softball Assistant Coach will be responsible for helping to coach and support the softball team successfully compete at the Big 12 and national level, both athletically and academically.  The position assists with overall supervision, organization, development and implementation of a nationally competitive women’s intercollegiate softball program.  This would include recruiting, coaching, scouting opponents, budgetary management, home event management, coordinating team travel, camp coordination, compliance with NCAA, Big 12 and institutional rules, and a commitment to academic development of student-athletes.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

  • Assist Head Coach in planning, facilitating, and running team, small group, and individual practice and training sessions; required attendance at all team practices and competitions;

  • Participate in all aspects of recruiting to a highly competitive NCAA Division 1 program, assist Head Coach with implementing an effective recruiting strategy designed to attract the best possible talent, including engaging and communicating with recruits, parents, and coaches;

  • Stay aware of current coaching techniques by participating in continuing education (e.g. clinics, seminars, etc.);

  • Liaison with Academic Support staff regarding student-athlete overall progress and academic success;

  • Assist Head Coach with practice and assigned field duties;

  • Liaison with Academic Support staff regarding student-athlete overall progress and academic success;

  • Help plan, coordinate, and facilitate the programs’ various camps and clinics;

  • Submit expense reports and other information requested in a timely and efficient manner, and assist Head Coach with budget management;

  • Exhibit Division I knowledge and expertise in the sport;

  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics, Head Softball Coach, or their designee.

 

Required Qualifications:

  

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university;

  • Experience coaching or working directly with a softball program at the NCAA Division One level;

  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations as they apply to the area of recruiting and eligibility;

  • Demonstrated exceptional problem-solving skills and solutions focused approach;

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills;

  • Ability to maintain positive, professional demeanor, and the ability to work effectively with various constituencies including prospective student athletes, current student athletes, their families, the general public, staff, administrators, and alumni;

  • Exhibit respect, empathy, and concern for student-athlete well-being;

  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed during peak game and recruiting seasons;

  • Ability and willing to travel as needed for softball-related events, such as: season competitions, post-season competitions, conference tournaments, recruiting, and scouting activities, etc.

 

Work Environment

This job operates in both a professional office environment and outside at softball-related events, including inclement weather. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and various digital devices, including, but not limited to:  cell phone, printer, copy machine, and other related devices. This job requires flexibility and adaptability in schedule and the ability to perform job related duties on short notice.

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus. This position may require frequent bending, moving, lifting, and carrying material weighing up to 50 pounds; standing up to eight hours each day; and working in all weather conditions.

 

Travel

Moderate travel is expected for this position for softball-related events, such as: season competitions, post-season competitions, conference tournaments, recruiting, and scouting activities, etc.

 

Hours of Work

This is a full-time position.  Days and hours of work will vary based on the needs of the softball program and as job duties demand. Early morning, evening and weekend work is required.
