JOB SUMMARY

In partnership with the head coach, helps develop strategies for developing and maintaining large and/or highly visible intercollegiate sports programs. Responsible for overseeing specific aspects of the program, EITHER Distance student-athletes OR Track & Field student-athletes consistent with a championship Track & Field/Cross Country program. Additionally, overseeing on and off-campus recruiting, conditioning programs, fundraising events, and various administrative duties for team travel. Must be attentive to detail; keep accurate records; and possess an ability to work with a diverse constituency, including but not limited to students, parents, coaches, faculty, staff, administrators, prospective students, and other outside contacts. Must foster an environment of NCAA compliance. May provide guidance to other personnel. Assumes head coach responsibilities as needed.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: By Agreement $40,000 - $50,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

40% - Plans and implements training seasons, in conjunction with the head coach, to maximize performance at the end of season competitions. Independently conducts practices, conditioning sessions and team meetings. Coaches team at competitions.
 

25% Works in conjunction with the head coach to implement an effective recruitment plan. This includes the effective identification, evaluation and recruitment of student athletes in which to shape and maintain a competitive athletic program. Assesses prospective student-athletes athletic and academic ability in keeping with DIII competitive and UCSC admission standards.
 

20% - Coordinates and communicates travel arrangements, itineraries, event marketing, facility reservations, budget, etc. Keeps inventory of team acquired practice gear, uniforms, and sport equipment. Strategically develops and supervises fundraising events for the program in conjunction with the head coach. Performs administrative duties and provides competition results information/quotes/articles to the Sports Information Director when requested.
 

10% - Ensures adherence to all governing rules, university, department, conference, NCAA policies and procedures, including student-athlete benefits.
 

5% - Represents and promotes professional conduct, university good will and high standards at all promotional and media related events including competitions. Attends all administrative meetings and serves on committees upon request. Supervises and mentors all Assistant and Volunteer Assistant in conjunction with the head coach.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in physical education, kinesiology, human performance or equivalent program and / or equivalent experience / training with a college-level track & field and/or cross country program.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with athletic participants, staff and parents of student athletes.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making; be an effective problem solver and effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Specialized knowledge of the team sport or activity, as well as basic technical expertise in coaching principles.
  • Current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the affiliated athletic conference, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the campus adheres, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Proven ability to teach specified sport to individuals and the team as a whole. Personal experience with specified sport.
  • Superior organizational skills required in order to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong written (including social media) communication skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills for interacting with our players and staff, as well as within the larger department, with alumni, and recruits and their families.
     

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in NCAA recruiting
  • 2 Years + coaching collegiate level cross country and track & field athletes

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess NCAA Coaches Certification (Recruiting) or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
  • Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary to move light to moderate objects up to 60 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
