Director, Sports Nutrition

Essential Functions of the Job:

1. Function: Nutrition Education and Counseling - Provides nutritional assessments, counseling, and/or meal plans to student-athletes according to evidence-based principles; documents interactions with student-athletes including meal plans, consultations, and team information sessions; delivers information regarding illegal and/or NCAA-banned nutritional supplements and substances; prioritizes the health and safety of the student-athletes; communicates both objective and subjective information for the purposes of injury prevention, performance enhancement, mental wellness, and nutritional guidance for all student-athletes; communicates information regarding nutritional program progression and pertinent variables to sport coaches/staff; provides interactive nutrition guidance for student-athletes in campus dining halls; makes external nutrition referrals as deemed appropriate; creates educational materials and presentations to educate student-athletes and staff; develops educational materials for distribution via social media, internal athletic department communication pathways, and face-to-face delivery; seeks educational opportunities, technology, or opportunities to enhance nutrition services for student-athletes; presents information to interdisciplinary student services teams regarding nutrition best practices for collegiate student-athletes; collaborates with multi-disciplinary teams as requested. Serves as the nutrition representative for the Tulane Athletic Care Team (TACT); actively seeks feedback from student-athletes, coaches, and staff to provide pertinent educational information; advocates for equitable nutritional resources for all student-athletes; and maintains required licensure and credentials to practice as a dietician in the state of Louisiana. (50%)

2. Function: Nutrition Leadership and Management - Oversees all aspects of the Tulane athletics sports nutrition department; develops athletic department protocols and standards based on evidence-based sport nutrition best-practices; establishes collaborative relationships amongst the sports performance staff including but not limited to, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and behavioral health; offers appropriate information regarding student-athlete nutrition to sport coaches and foster a collaborative and safe approach to care; abides by HIPAA regulations in communication of protected student-athlete health information; promotes and represents Tulane athletics through speaking engagements, research collaboration, and/or community outreach; provides a respectful and inclusive work environment that encourages skill development and integration of innovative tools; serves as a preceptor for dietetic interns as provided by the Tulane Dietetic Internship program; oversees and manages the budget for the nutrition department; orders supplies, equipment, and nutritional products for the nutrition department. Maintains an accurate inventory of all supplies, equipment, and nutritional products; orders nutritional products on behalf of sport programs and support units as needed; maintains subscriptions with sport nutrition products and/or services. Shows meaningful and routine implementation of such products and/or services; and pursues continuing education opportunities for professional and personal development. (40%)

3. Function: Dining Hall Collaboration - Assists in managing daily operations of the student-athlete Fueling Station and Green Wave Grille including food inventory, food suggestions, hours of operation, risk management, and other tasks pertaining to the health and safety of all student-athletes; and provides guidance to campus dining affiliates regarding meal selection, nutritional portfolios, and diverse offerings for varying dietary needs. (5%)

4. Function: Other Duties - Performs other duties as requested or required, as assigned by the Deputy Athletic Director, Student Services whether or not specifically mentioned in this job description; and exhibits a willingness to undertake additional tasks. (5%)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition or closely related field

  • Registered Dietician (RD) or Registered Dietician Nutritionist (RDN) with active status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

  • Licensed Dietician in the state of Louisiana 90 days after hire.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities/Competencies:

  • Conduct dietary assessments and counseling for Tulane student-athletes.

  • Facilitate and develop nutrition education sessions and materials/resources for student-athletes and sport teams.

  • Analyze and/or conduct student-athlete body composition assessments.

  • Promote Tulane Athletics through public engagement including but not limited to research collaboration, speaking engagements, and community outreach  

  • Develop and implement sports nutrition policies and procedures

  • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary student-athlete service teams and campus dining affiliates

  • Ability to interact effectively with coaches, administrators, student athletes and vendors

  • Perform various administrative duties

  • Adapt to a flexible work schedule including nights and weekends

  • Ability to travel with sport teams for away contests

  • Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines as it relates to communication of student-athlete health status regarding sport participation

  • Knowledge of NCAA and American Athletic Conference rules and regulations 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years’ experience as an employee, fellow, intern, or graduate assistant with intercollegiate/professional athletics or sports-related field

  • Master’s Degree in Nutrition or Nutrition-related field

  • Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD)

  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification

NCAA Related:
Ensures that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations. Seeks interpretations from the compliance staff before acting when necessary. Reports potential rules violations immediately.  Completes required compliance paperwork in a timely and efficient manner. Monitors all of their areas and/or programs activities closely to maintain compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
