Assistant Director, Sports Nutrition

Position Summary: The Assistant Director of Sport Nutrition will assist in all aspects of the Sports Nutrition program for Tulane Athletics as directed by the Director. The Assistant will oversee the nutritional needs of assigned teams with functions including, but not limited to: nutrition counseling, team education, meal planning, and body composition testing. The Assistant will collaborate with coaches, athletic trainers, strength coaches and other support staff as a part of a sport specific performance team to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to student-athlete well-being.

Essential Functions of the Job:

1. Function: Education and Counseling - Provides nutritional assessments, counseling, and/or meal plans to student-athletes according to evidence-based principles; documents interactions with student-athletes including meal plans, consultations, and team information sessions; delivers information regarding illegal and/or NCAA-banned nutritional supplements and substances; prioritizes the health and safety of the student-athletes; communicates both objective and subjective information for the purposes of injury prevention, performance enhancement, mental wellness, and nutritional guidance for all student-athletes; communicates information regarding nutritional program progression and pertinent variables to sport coaches/staff; provides interactive nutrition guidance for student-athletes in campus dining halls; makes external nutrition referrals as deemed appropriate; creates educational materials and presentations to educate student athletes and staff; develops educational materials for distribution via social media, internal athletic department communication pathways, and face-to-face delivery; seeks educational opportunities, technology, or opportunities to enhance nutrition services for student-athletes; actively seeks feedback from student-athletes, coaches, and staff to provide pertinent educational information and advocates for equitable nutritional resources for all student-athletes. (50%)

2. Function: Leadership and Management - Assists in all aspects of the Tulane athletics sports nutrition department as seen fit by the Director; establishes collaborative relationships amongst the sports performance staff including but not limited to, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and behavioral health; offers appropriate information regarding student-athlete nutrition to sport coaches and foster a collaborative and safe approach to care; provides quality meal planning for assigned teams as needed by the specific sport; abides by HIPAA regulations in communication of protected student athlete health information; promotes and represents Tulane athletics through speaking engagements, research collaboration, and/or community outreach; provides a respectful and inclusive work environment that encourages skill development and integration of innovative tools; assists in ordering supplies, equipment, and nutritional products for the nutrition department and pursues continuing education opportunities for professional and personal development. (40%)

3. Function: Other Duties - Performs other duties as requested or required, whether or not specifically mentioned in this job description. (10%)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, dietetics, or a related area

  • Registered Dietitian with active status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration

  • Experience working within a collegiate sport nutrition setting

  • Licensed Dietitian in the state of Louisiana 90 days after hire

  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies:

  • Conduct dietary assessments and counseling for Tulane student-athletes

  • Facilitate and develop nutrition education sessions and materials/resources for student athletes and sport teams

  • Analyze and/or conduct student-athlete body composition assessments

  • Promote Tulane Athletics through public engagement including but not limited to research collaboration, speaking engagements, and community outreach

  • Planning meals for team travel competitions

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary student-athlete service teams and campus dining affiliates

  • Ability to interact effectively with coaches, administrators, student athletes and vendors

  • Adapt to a flexible work schedule including nights and weekends

  • Ability to travel with sport teams for away contests as needed

  • Knowledge of HIPAA guidelines as it relates to communication of student-athlete health status regarding sport participation

  • Knowledge of NCAA and American Athletic Conference rules and regulations

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Master’s Degree

  • Experience at a NCAA Division I institution

NCAA Related:

Ensures that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations. Seeks interpretations from the compliance staff before acting when necessary. Reports potential rules violations immediately.  Completes required compliance paperwork in a timely and efficient manner. Monitors all of their areas and/or programs activities closely to maintain compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
