
Position Summary: Assists with the coaching and administrative duties of the NCAA Division I men’s tennis program. Primary function is the proper instruction and teaching of the fundamentals of the sport assigned. Secondary responsibilities include recruiting prospective student-athletes as well as monitoring the current student-athletes. Other duties will include sport camp involvements as well as certain NCAA duties.
Essential Functions of the Job:
Function: Coaching - The Assistant Coach is responsible for assisting the head coach with the teaching of sport specific fundamentals and skills associated with their assigned sport which includes but is not limited to; observing and evaluating performance and demonstrating proper techniques, executing practice plans to improve student-athletes skill level. In addition, the Assistant Coach is responsible for providing instruction to their student-athletes during practice and competition on certain game day situations relative to plays needed to be run or formations to be in per their instruction. Assists the head coach with the management of all aspects of the sports program. Serves as an on-court coach during practices and games, provides advice on strategy while evaluating player performance and demonstrating proper skills or techniques needed to perform at a high level. (50%)
Function: Recruiting Evaluates and recruits high school players, entertains prospective recruits and their accompanied family on campus. Introduces them to the on-campus amenities and samples campus life during their tours. Make phone calls, emails or social media contact within the NCAA guidelines for their respective sport. Maintain contact with recruit per Head Coach’s directive and assigned area of responsibility whether that be a region or geographical area or positional responsibility. Monitors the academic performance of certain players as assigned by the head coach. (40%)
Function: Sports Camps - Assists in directing or directs sport camps as requested or required by the Head Coach. Markets and organizes the camps so that they are efficiently run and comply with Athletic Department standards and policies. Databases are kept of those attending camps and all revenue derived from camps is reported to the Athletic Business office. The safety and welfare of participants are monitored. All employees are hired, trained and monitored during camps activities. (5%)
Function: Other Duties - Performs other duties as assigned by the Head Coach. (5%)
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree
OR
High School Diploma/Equivalent
6 years’ coaching experience
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies:
Must have a valid and unrestricted (not including corrective lens needs) U.S. Driver's license and must meet the Tulane University Motor Vehicle Policy criteria to become authorized as a driver
Expertise in the technical aspects of tennis
Strong interpersonal skills
Ability to interact effectively with coaches, administrators, student athletes and vendors
Extremely organized, self-starter, intrinsically motivated
Strong organizational, management and leadership skills
Proven ability to multi-task effectively
Ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines
Proficient computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and social media
Availability to work flexible work schedule including nights and weekends
Travel with sport teams for away contests
Thorough knowledge of NCAA and American conference rules and regulations
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's Degree
Coaching experience in NCAA Division I Intercollegiate Athletics
Playing experience in NCAA Division I Intercollegiate Athletics
Professional playing experience
NCAA Related:
Ensures that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations. Seeks interpretations from the compliance staff before acting when necessary. Reports potential rules violations immediately. Completes required compliance paperwork in a timely and efficient manner. Monitors all of their areas and/or programs activities closely to maintain compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
