Assistant Athletic Director, Major Gifts

Position Summary: The Assistant Athletics Director, Major Gifts is a professional fundraising position responsible for leading the Athletics Development major gift program including identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding a targeted portfolio of priority fundraising prospects in concert with Athletics’ strategic priorities and objectives. Will also be responsible to tracking of team fundraising activities such as monthly and quarterly solicitations, visits, and portfolio reviews. This position works closely with University Advancement and athletic leadership to execute fundraising initiatives aimed at raising private donor support for Tulane Athletics.

Essential Job Functions:

Function: Proactively identifies and assesses prospects as potential donors and/or volunteer leaders. Creates, manages, and advances effective relationships with assigned prospects toward the goal of appropriate solicitation. Maintains a monthly minimum level of appointments or calls. Monitors activities to determine effectiveness and maximize contributions. Identifies, cultivates, stewards, and solicits donors, both for major gifts and significant annual fund gifts. (50%)

Function: Maintains daily internal operations and project management for major gift campaigns at the assignment of the Senior Associate Athletics Director of Development. (20%)

Function: Supervises the Associate Director, Major Gifts by providing effective management on gift solicitation, donor communication, project management and other duties as assigned. (20%)

Function: Performs other duties as requested or required, whether or not specifically mentioned in this job description. (10%)

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • 5 years’ direct fundraising or related experience in the solicitation and closing of gifts of $100K and higher. Transferable, related experience such as marketing, admissions, public relations, alumni relations, trust officer, or sales may be considered.

OR

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • 11 years’ direct fundraising or related experience in the solicitation and closing of gifts of $100K and higher (transferable, related experience such as marketing, admissions, public relations, alumni relations, trust officer, or sales may be considered).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities/Competencies:

  1. Strong interpersonal, organizational, management and leadership skills

  2. Ability to interact effectively with coaches, administrators, student athletes and vendors

  3. Extremely organized, self-starter, intrinsically motivated

  4. Proven ability to multi-task effectively

  5. Proven ability to generate philanthropic revenue through major gift strategies

  6. Ability to prioritize assignments and meet deadlines

  7. Proficient computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and other software necessary to the development operation

  8. Availability to work flexible work schedule including nights and weekends

  9. Ability to travel locally and nationally for appointments

  10. Thorough knowledge of NCAA and American conference rules and regulations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree

  • Working knowledge of Advance, Paciolan, and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

NCAA Related: 

Ensures that all Department of Athletics and University related activities operate in full compliance with university, conference and NCAA rules and regulations. Attends and participates in scheduled compliance seminars and complies with all the Athletic Department’s efforts to monitor compliance with NCAA regulations. Seeks interpretations from the compliance staff before acting when necessary. Reports potential rules violations immediately. Completes required compliance paperwork in a timely and efficient manner.  Monitors all his/her areas and/or program activities closely to maintain compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
