Job Summary

The Athletic Trainer will coordinate and provide health care and comprehensive athletic training services to student-athletes; maintain records and supplies; and ensure fiscal responsibility as it relates to student-athlete care. The Athletic Trainer will also coordinate care with sports medicine physicians in the integration of evidence-based rehabilitation strategies in order to ensure the student-athletes are able to effectively and safely return to full fitness/participation; and work collaboratively within a sports performance model with other professionals, including: Sr. Associate AD for Sports Medicine and Performance, Director of Athletic Training, Sports Dietitian, Strength and Conditioning Coaches, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists, and Clinical Psychologist, to ensure positive student-athlete experience and treatment outcomes, and to mitigate the risk of sustaining injury.

 

The Athletic Trainer will conduct and supervise injury and illness prevention, injury management, immediate care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, and provide ongoing patient supervision to ensure compliance with treatment plans, expectations, and standing operating procedures under the medical supervision of the Team Physician, as required by the Maryland State Practice Act. This position will report to the Director of Athletic Training and must be able to work in a creative and collaborative team environment where change is embraced and innovation is encouraged. The incumbent will manage administrative duties as assigned by the Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine and Performance and/or Director of Athletic Training. This individual may also serve as a preceptor to mentoring athletic training students in the Athletic Training Education Program and will take on various other duties at the discretion of the Director of Athletic Training and Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine and Performance.

 

Responsibilities and Duties

 

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • In consultation with the Director of Athletic Training and Team Physicians, the Athletic Trainer facilitates all health care for student-athletes which includes formulating effective therapeutic treatment plans, implementing treatments, monitoring progress, and returning student-athletes to play

  • Possesses technical and practical expertise in the appropriate application and supervision of a wide range of rehabilitative exercises/therapy and diagnostic equipment

  • Applies evaluative skills and techniques for orthopedic and medical problems associated with intercollegiate athletics, as well as participates in the medical clearance and evaluation of incoming and returning student-athletes

  • Records, analyzes, and maintains medical records for daily treatments/rehabilitation, practice and game limitations, medical services, and referrals; produces end-of-year reports for injury trends; and produces value-based reporting on services to teams

  • Positively communicates and interacts on a daily basis with the athletic department’s multidisciplinary performance team, including medical professionals, coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, dietitian, and administrative staff; coordinates plans of care and diagnostic tests set forth by team physicians; facilitates and secures test results and prepares information for physician clinics; gathers information needed for insurance claims and follows up as needed

  • Delegates administrative tasks and facility management responsibilities at the discretion of the Director of Athletic Training

  • Complies with policies, rules, and regulations governing the NCAA, CAA conference, the state of Maryland, Towson University, the athletic department, and the sports medicine program

  • Maintains continuing education to support and advance knowledge base

  • May serve as a preceptor in the MSAT program; provides supervision of athletic training students during their clinical experience, if assigned

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletic Training and Sr. Associate Athletics Director for Sports Medicine and Performance

 

The work hours for this position will be based around sports schedules and include early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays. Limited travel is required.

 

Qualifications and Skills

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in athletic training or a related field

  • Board of Certification (BOC) (Please list certification on your application)

  • CPR/AED/First Aid certification (Please list certification on your application)

  • Eligible for state of Maryland Athletic Trainers License

  • Under the direction of the Director of Athletic Training, implements treatments and rehabilitation services

  • Ability to evaluate medical condition of student-athletes prior to and during their participation in intercollegiate athletics  

  • Ability to work and understand human performance in relation to workload management

  • Ability to collaborate in data management for performance monitoring and collaborative decision making

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FMS, PES, CES, or CSCS credentials or an equivalent

  • At least two years of experience of working experience in a NCAA D1 environment

  • Evidence of strong clinical skills in a team environment

 

Salary and Benefits 
Target hiring range is $56,000 - $62,500 annually and full University benefits that include 22 days of annual leave, up to 15 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
