Job Description

The Senior Associate Athletic Director, CFO is the head of the athletics business operations team which manages athletics team budgets and support services budgets and executes all financial matters related to procurement services, human resources and payroll, and applies Tarleton State University (“University”) policies and guidelines for fiscally responsible execution of athletics business operations.  

 

Prepares annual operating budgets in collaboration with department heads and coaches for submission to University. Assists with the annual (and necessary mid-year) salary projection process, extracting data from Tarleton Budget, reviewing for accuracy, applying annual compensation adjustments, and preparing financial reports for Vice President & Director of Athletics and Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration.  Serves as key team member in the annual setup of Tarleton Athletics Budget, including testing processes. Additionally, troubleshoots problems and resolves errors throughout the budgeting process. Serves in departmental lead role providing information to Budget Office staff in the annual review and management of positions and operations budgets. Serves as the lead role in departmental budget training sessions & workshops, including one-on-one training as needed.  

 

Position is located in Stephenville, Texas with work hours of Monday - Friday from 8am to 5pm or as work requirements indicate, which may include after hours and weekends. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities 

Budget Oversight & Management:  

  • Monitors balances in all indexes and advises coaches and staff members regarding any potential fiscal problems, collaborates to develop solutions and responses to issues, and recommends changes to procedures that ensure compliance with Tarleton and TAMUS Board of Regents (“BoR”) policies. 

  • Responsible for budget/fiscal activities, including budget allocations, adjustments, expenditures tracking, and assisting with annual financial reporting requirements, including NCAA and EADA reports. 

  • Provides oversight and tracking of revenue, funding, and expenditures of Tarleton Athletics budgets, restricted gifts, and athletics funds held at/by the Alumni Foundation. 

 

Strategic Fiscal Partner:  

  • Responsible for the fiscal oversight and operations of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and is responsible for implementing short and long-range business and financial planning in concert with the Vice President & Director of Athletics. 

  • Oversees budget development and implementation, monitoring, forecasting and analysis of department operating budgets. 

  • Monitors multiple indexes of significant impact with varied funding sources and provide strategic observations to the Vice President & Director of Athletics. 

  • Refines and updates custom monthly reports for staff, analyzing, summarizing, and communicating results and making recommendations. 

  • Creates new analyses to aid decision-making and performs ad hoc research and analyses in response to coaches and staff requests. 

  • Researches and analyzes budget activities, identifies budget issues, provides alternative solutions, and determines procedures and transactions to resolve issues. 

  • Takes lead role to assure budgetary consistency and compliance for the organization, presenting recommendations for fiscal change. 

 

Data Analysis & Reporting:  

  • Provides complex analytical support and financial management expertise to Tarleton Athletics and University constituents; data analysis/assessments and reports provide decision support for financial planning and program reviews. 

  • Researches and develops dashboard reports for different levels of university users; determines appropriate metrics, design layout, coordinate distribution, and/or presentation of data. 

 

Other:  

  • Develops and presents on budget topics to campus constituents as requested. 

  • Serves as liaison with outside business partners, including auditors, legal counsel, and contracted service providers. 

 

Required Minimum Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related field, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.  

  • Five (5) years’ experience working within a Business Office at the NCAA Division I level. 

  • Ten years of experience in accounting, finance, budgeting, or related experience, including experience with successful implementation of revenue enhancements, cost savings and efficiency strategies and projects.

  • Demonstrated competence and experience in the development, analysis, and execution of complex budgets and long-range business/fiscal management plans.  

  • Successful experience in interpreting, explaining, and presenting detailed budget and fiscal data, both verbally and in writing, to constituents. 

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of spreadsheet, database query, word processing, and financial modeling software. Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communications.  Experience using Windows, Excel, Access, Word, and Outlook are preferred.  

  • Experience working with a wide range of budget and fiscal management processes.  

  • Experience with Banner software and/or computer applications for budget and fiscal management.  

  • Governmental fund accounting experience.  

  • Possesses good understanding and knowledge of NCAA-related policies and financial reporting

Salary

Competitive salary commensurate with experience, starting at $100,000.

 

The target base annual salary is commensurate with experience and may be negotiable based on funding availability and candidate experience/skillset in relation to the minimum requirements of this position.
