Assistant Softball Coach

Department: Athletics & Recreation
Reports To: Head Softball Coach

Position Summary

The Assistant Softball Coach assists in the development, implementation, and daily operations of a competitive NCAA Division III softball program. This position supports all aspects of the student-athlete experience, including athletic and personal development, recruiting, competitive preparation, program administration, and operational management. The Assistant Coach contributes to a positive, inclusive, and high-performing team culture while upholding the mission and values of the institution, department, and NCAA.

Coaching Responsibilities

  • Assist in the strategic planning, organization, and execution of the softball program, including short- and long-term goal setting, performance evaluation, and program development initiatives.

  • Analyze team and opponent performance through video review, statistical analysis, scouting reports, and other performance metrics to inform game preparation and decision-making.

  • Collaborate with the Head Coach on practice planning, lineup development, in-game adjustments, and overall competitive strategy.

  • Utilize data analytics and performance indicators to evaluate student-athlete development, training effectiveness, and team performance outcomes.

  • Support all phases of the recruiting process, including prospect identification, evaluation, database management, campus visits, and communication with prospective student-athletes and their families.

  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations governing recruiting and student-athlete participation.

  • Work closely with the Office of Admissions to identify, recruit, and enroll academically qualified student-athletes who align with institutional and program goals.

  • Contribute to continuous program assessment and improvement by identifying trends, evaluating outcomes, and implementing strategic adjustments.

  • Mentor student-athletes in leadership, accountability, personal development, sportsmanship, and overall well-being while fostering an inclusive and supportive team environment.

  • Monitor student-athlete eligibility and academic progress in collaboration with the Head Coach and academic support staff.

  • Assist with team operations and logistics, including travel coordination, scheduling, meal planning, and resource allocation to ensure efficient program execution.

  • Manage team social media platforms and support digital communications efforts that enhance program visibility and engagement.

  • Assist with budget planning, expense tracking, and resource management, including recruiting, travel, equipment, and operational expenditures.

  • Coordinate the selection, ordering, inventory, distribution, and maintenance of team equipment, uniforms, apparel, and supplies.

  • Support approved fundraising initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Athletics and the Office of Development and Alumni Engagement.

  • Assist in the planning and execution of team events, camps, clinics, alumni engagement activities, and other initiatives that strengthen program culture and stakeholder relationships.

Department Responsibilities

  • Prepare and submit reports, data, and other requested materials in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Complete all required departmental, institutional, NCAA, and conference training and certification requirements.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance coaching effectiveness and leadership skills.

  • Attend and actively contribute to departmental staff meetings, in-service trainings, and divisional meetings.

  • Serve on departmental and institutional committees as assigned and support broader athletics and recreation initiatives.

  • Assist with event management and game operations for intercollegiate athletic contests, including serving as a game manager for home competitions across multiple sports.

  • Represent the Department of Athletics and Recreation in a professional manner at institutional, community, conference, and NCAA events.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Master's degree preferred.

Experience

  • Previous coaching experience required.

  • Collegiate coaching experience preferred.

  • Experience with recruiting, player development, video analysis, and data-informed decision-making preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong written, verbal, interpersonal, and public speaking communication skills.

  • Demonstrated organizational, planning, and time-management abilities.

  • Ability to analyze and interpret performance data to support coaching and recruiting decisions.

  • Commitment to student-athlete development, academic success, diversity, equity, inclusion, and sportsmanship.

  • Ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, parents, alumni, and external stakeholders.

  • Proficiency with standard office technologies, recruiting platforms, video analysis software, and social media tools.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended travel periods as required.

Certifications

  • Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certification required or must be obtained upon hire.

Compensation Range

In compliance with the New Jersey Wage Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $35,600.00 - $45,066.67. This range represents the University’s good faith estimate of possible compensation at the time of posting. Stevens Institute of Technology determines compensation based on factors including the position’s scope and responsibilities, the candidate’s experience, education, skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational considerations. The final salary will be set considering departmental budget, qualifications, and relevant credentials. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes additional forms of compensation, such as incentives, stipends, or other applicable pay components.
