Director of Athletic Communications

POSITION SUMMARY:

Manage the institution’s athletics communications and assist the Director of Athletics with vision, leadership, and direction as it relates to sports information and marketing of the growing athletics program. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to coordinating all communications activities relevant to the Department of Athletics and its sports programs, including recruiting materials, website and game management, serving as the liaison between the local and national media and student athletes, and maintaining statistics and records for all sports.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the Department of Athletics webmaster and update www.stubobcats.com as well as assist with the social media channels regularly in addition to the conference website and NAIAsports.org (rosters, stats, news stories, features, historical archiving, etc.).
  • Provide in-game statistics for all home games using Presto Sports and/or Dakstats and upload immediately to www.stubobcats, the conference and NAIAsports.org.
  • Provide statistical coverage and historical records of St. Thomas athletic events as required by the NAIA and The Sun Conference.
  • Responsible for dissemination of all forms of information (press releases, videos, photographs, graphics, etc.) via the St. Thomas athletic department's website, social media outlets, and local or national media.
  • Responsible for the supervision of all student and staff assistants, including but not limited to: graduate assistants, interns, student workers, contract employees, video, film and/or audio crews, photographers, public address announcers and statisticians.
  • Accountable for all aspects of the pre-game, in-game and post-game productions of live streaming of St. Thomas's athletic and promotional events and activities.
  • Prepare and design game programs, recruiting brochures, and all other promotional and marketing materials for the athletics department and staff.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with media professionals, alumni, friends, fans, support groups and University personnel.
  • Pitch local, regional and national media outlets to procure maximum media exposure for the University’s athletic teams, coaches and student-athletes.
  • Assemble end-of-season nominations for conference and national awards.
  • Assist the Director of Athletics with the research and information necessary for written reports, special events and interviews.
  • Serve as the athletic department's liaison to University Communications, local media outlets, web service provider, live streaming provider, and visiting teams.
  • Coordinate integration with Sports Administration program and School of Communications into Sports Information operations.
  • Attend the NAIA Convention, as needed.
  • Travel as needed to away contests and/or tournaments.
  • Serve on University committees as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Qualifications

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred. Qualifications include a minimum of two years of related experience in sports information or media relations.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas: use of in game software, game management, internet radio broadcasting, and should have strong writing and editing skills.
  • Demonstration of strong organizational, communication, and time management skills is required.
  •  Position requires some travel and irregular work hours demanding a willingness to work a flexible schedule and commit to evenings/weekends.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and exercise critical human relation skills in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with the university community.
