Shenandoah University, a Division III institution in the beautiful northern Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, is seeking applicants for the position of Athletic Director. Shenandoah is a full member of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference; SU offers 23 varsity sports and has 75 full-time and part-time coaches and staff members. This is a full-time, 12-month position with competitive salary and benefits.

The Athletic Director oversees a department characterized by strong academics, robust relationships with faculty and staff around campus, and a commitment to community service. 

The (AVP &) Athletic Director will be the strongest advocate and voice for all athletic programs at SU and must demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, sportsmanship, and the philosophy of Division III. In addition to overseeing the departmental budget and compliance with NCAA and ODAC regulations, the AD will be directly responsible for mentoring coaches, recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, and leading all athletic department staff. The Athletic Director will be actively involved in fundraising in cooperation with the Office of Advancement and collaborate strategically with the Office of Admissions to support institutional enrollment goals through recruitment of student-athletes. The Athletic Director will also have a strong presence at SU as well as in the Northern Shenandoah Valley and Loudoun communities. In particular, the AD will strengthen the SU Athletic Hall of Fame, SU 1875 Club, and SU alumni support, and oversee the expansion of the Wilkins Athletics & Events Center.

The AD reports directly to both the president and the VP for Student Affairs, works closely with the university's vice presidents, serves on the University Cabinet, and teaches one course a year. SU looks to the new Athletic Director to position Shenandoah’s sports teams to achieve even greater success in the ODAC, bolster opportunities to compete on the NCAA national level, improve recruitment and retention of student-athletes, and reach higher levels of fundraising for athletics.  In addition to overseeing all athletic endeavors, the Athletic Director will be supportive of the efforts of the marching band, color guard, club sports, intramural sports, and cheerleaders, and most importantly, the academic studies and career pathways of student-athletes.

Required Skills

A bachelor's degree is required; a master's degree, coaching experience, and prior collegiate athletic administrative experience are preferred. Extensive knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, a commitment to inclusion and belonging, and the ability to be fair and balanced across all sports are essential.

Salary Range

$125,000.00 - $145,000.00
