Position Overview

Primary Function:

Serving as a member of the Athletics Senior Leadership Team, the Director of Sports Medicine is responsible for the administration of the sports medicine program, including managing athletic training staff, coordinating with team physicians, and the administration of insurance. Oversee complete medical care regarding all varsity student-athletes participating in 24 varsity sports. Evaluate and treat athletic injuries, rehabilitate athletes, and recommend injury prevention strategies.

This position works with considerable independence and self-direction. Only the general direction and scope of the work to be accomplished are discussed with the supervisor.

  • This position follows a yearly schedule of 9.5 months. 

Position Description

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the daily operation of Fowler Center Athletic Training Room and Kyle Rote Soccer Facility Athletic Training Room including staffing.

  • Supervise Athletic Trainers, work-study students, and student interns. 

  • Evaluate athletic injuries; administer proper first aid and emergency care.

  • Make appropriate physician referrals for further diagnosis and treatment or appropriate follow-up care.

  • Oversee the treatment and rehabilitation of all athletic injuries including planning and implementing a reconditioning program; supervising exercises; and determining a safe return to sports activity.

  • Maintain injury/medical records files including correspondence with physicians.

  • Communicate with coaches, administrators, physicians, and parents regarding the injury status of athletes.

  • Ensure all varsity sports practices and home competitions are staffed either on-site or in the Athletic Training Room by a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC). 

  • Serve as Athletic Department AED site coordinator.

  • Conduct Adult CPR / AED training.

  • Develop and maintain Emergency Action Plans for each varsity athletic venue, including lightning and catastrophic guidelines.

  • Ensure that all incoming freshmen have on file a current physical before they are permitted to participate in varsity athletics.

  • Confirm that all athletes have filed up-to-date health insurance.

 

Judgment Required: 

Performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.

 

Budgetary Responsibility: 

Monitors expenditures against budget; prepares budget data for review/approval by supervisor/department head.

Personal Interaction/Communications: 

Student Contact: Daily, working with student-athletes.

Internal (Operations Committee, Faculty, Administrative department heads). Frequent, working with coaches and administrators.

External (Regents & Trustees, government officials or agencies, visitors, parents, other institutions, colleges, or companies, suppliers)

Frequent; contacting physicians and parents of student-athletes.

Attributes of a Successful Candidate

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in related field, Master’s degree preferred

Experience:
3-5 years experience

Job-Related Skills: None. 

Licenses & Certifications:

  • National Certification (NATABOC), 
  • TN State Licensure, 
  • Driver’s License F Endorsement

Working Environment:

  • Work is performed in an office setting and within athletic facilities. (Approximately 60 hours per week, Fall, Winter, Spring). 

  • Travel is required to athletic contests and accompanying student-athletes to visits with physicians. 

  • Practice coverage includes early mornings, late afternoons, and evenings. 

  • Game coverage includes nights and weekends. 

  • Exposure to bodily fluids.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, 

  • Must be able to walk for extended periods of time, 

  • Must be able to climb (many stairs, ladders), 

  • Must be able to crawl and or kneel, 

  • Must be able to push and/or pull objects,

  • Must be able to lift between 21-50 pounds (Medium work), 

  • Must be able to carry between 21-50 pounds (Medium work)

  • Nights and weekends for game coverage
