Assistant Athletic Trainer (club sports)

Position Summary

Under the guidance of the Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine, the Assistant Athletic Trainer for Club Sports will play a key role in delivering a comprehensive sports medicine program for Recreational Sports and Athletics. Key responsibilities include:

  • Preventing athletic injuries by assessing the physical condition of student-athletes and implementing effective conditioning programs to promote health and performance.

  • Acting as the primary first responder for athletic injuries, including recognizing and evaluating injuries promptly and developing tailored treatment and rehabilitation plans.

  • Utilizing advanced therapeutic modalities and specialized exercise equipment to ensure optimal recovery and long-term success.

Position Information

  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2026, with the possibility of reappointment. 

  • This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. 

  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. (Ability to travel to away contests)

  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.

Key Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Biodex, SwimEx, and Alter-G.

  • Additional credentials of advance study in an athletic training related subject matter. 

    • Examples are: functional evaluation/rehabilitation, instrumented or manual soft tissue mobilization, Kinesiotape, etc.

  • Experience as a certified athletic trainer in intercollegiate athletics; in particular, with football, club sports, hockey, lacrosse, and/or rugby.

  • Computer skills in inventory, budget, and insurance.

  • Ability to travel to away contests.

Licenses/Certifications Required

  • Valid California Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 10 days of hire.

  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification. 

  • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid. 

  • Must stay current with these certifications and submit proof to the Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine.

Compensation and Benefits

Starting salary upon appointment is not expected to exceed $4,424 per month. 

Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.
