Randolph College, located in Lynchburg, Virginia, seeks a dynamic full-time professional to serve as Head Coach for its Softball program.  Duties will include managing all operations and staff, plus recruiting and retaining talented student-athletes for competition in the 2025-26 academic year and beyond.

 

Randolph College is a residential, liberal arts institution committed to excellence and competes in the NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

 

Bachelor's degree required (Master’s preferred) and coaching experience required, preferably at the collegiate level, and a proven ability to recruit quality student-athletes.

Job Description 

Summary/objective

Serve as Head Coach of Softball program. Manage all operations and staff of the program. Recruit student-athletes for participation in varsity NCAA Div. III softball program.

Essential functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.

·         Serve as Head Coach of the Softball program; coach and schedule practices; monitor annual operation and recruiting budget; meet institution, NCAA, and ODAC obligations as the head coach and director.

·         Train, supervise and evaluate part-time, graduate, and volunteer assistant coaches.

·         Organize and implement successful recruiting plan to yield an appropriate number and quality of student-athletes for the softball program; conduct recruiting efforts including managing communication flow (printed, online and telephone), participate in Randolph Admission recruiting events and coordinate interviews on campus, in high schools, and at homes or other locations with student-athletes, parents, and high school/club coaches.

·         Responsible for supervising the physical conditioning and development of injury prevention techniques, preseason preparation of student-athletes, and post-season completion of program administrative duties.

·         Establish and attain competition goals, including the scheduling of appropriately competitive teams.

 

Additional Duties

·         Provide general counsel, guidance, and inspiration to students regarding their overall success, particularly including utilizing new student orientation activities, career services, academic success programs, living successfully in residence halls and behaving within the College's student conduct expectations. Promote good sportsmanship.

·         Assist, as needed, in developing positive alumni relations and fundraising efforts to support a competitive Division III athletics program.

·         Perform additional departmental administrative duties as needed, including occasional event management.

·         Demonstrate community involvement with active leadership as a positive role model including participation in a team-based community service project and encouragement of student-athlete participation in mentoring or other service programs.

·         Knowledge of softball techniques and strategies.

·         Knowledge of NCAA rules and conference policies and procedures.

·         Excellent communication skills including effective verbal and written abilities.

·         Strong organizational and leadership skills.

·         Ability to work effectively with a diverse population.

·         Ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty and coaches.

·         Ability to positively influence public relations between the Athletics Department, the campus, and the community.

·         Computer and database skills necessary.

Supervisory responsibilities

Directly supervise assistant coach(es), graduate assistant(s), volunteer coach(es).

Work environment

Serves as a member of the Department of Athletics. Reports to the Director of Athletics. Recruits and supervises part-time and volunteer assistant coaches. Must work effectively on a regular basis with members of the faculty and staff members in Athletics, Admission, Student Affairs, Alumnae/Alumni Relations, Institutional Advancement, and other College offices.

 


 

Physical demands

Working environment includes both indoors and outdoors, exposure to various weather conditions, including temperature extremes.  Indoor work environment may not be air conditioned during hot weather.  Must have the physical ability to walk, lift up to 50 pounds, run, bend, twist, climb, see, hear, and communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.

Travel required

Travel to/from athletics events, NCAA and/or ODAC meetings, and/or professional development workshops required.

Required education and experience

·         Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and a commitment to the values, standards, and expectations of NCAA Division III athletics and a liberal arts college.

Preferred experience

·         An extensive and accomplished coaching background in softball, preferably at the collegiate level, and a proven ability to recruit quality student-athletes.

Additional eligibility requirements

Must have valid Virginia driver’s license and insurance coverage (if driving own vehicle) or be insurable.
