Associate Commissioner for External Communications

 

Position Summary

 

The Associate Commissioner for External Communications oversees the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation's (MPSF) external communications strategy, directing media relations, digital communications, branding, content development, storytelling, and public engagement efforts that enhance the visibility and reputation of the Conference and its member institutions.

 

Serving as the primary communications representative for the Conference, the Associate Commissioner will develop and execute strategies that elevate the visibility and reputation of the MPSF, its member institutions, student-athletes, coaches, and championships. The position serves as the principal liaison to media representatives, digital platforms, corporate partners, sponsors, and external stakeholders while fostering meaningful engagement with collegiate athletics audiences across the nation.

 

The Associate Commissioner plays a critical role in shaping and amplifying the MPSF brand through innovative storytelling, strategic communications, multimedia content creation, and media outreach. This position requires collaboration with conference administrators, institutional communications staffs, coaches, student-athletes, and campus leaders to enhance awareness of the MPSF and its member programs.


 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Communications and Media Relations

 

  • Serve as the primary public-facing communications contact for the Conference.

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies that advance the MPSF brand and strategic objectives.

  • Manage and coordinate external communications personnel, including independent contractors, interns, and student workers.

  • Organize and oversee press conferences, media days, championship media operations, and other conference events.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets.

  • Coordinate interview requests, press releases, and media distribution efforts.

  • Serve as the primary communications liaison to member institution communications staffs.

  • Manage the MPSF's social media platforms, website content, podcasts, newsletters, and digital communication channels.

  • Oversee and maintain the MPSF Network YouTube channel and related digital video platforms.

  • Compile, maintain, and distribute conference statistics, records, and historical information to support communications and compliance efforts.

Brand Development and Storytelling

 

  • Promote the achievements of MPSF student-athletes, coaches, teams, and member institutions through compelling storytelling and strategic content initiatives.

  • Develop messaging that enhances awareness of MPSF sports and championships while strengthening audience engagement.

  • Identify and leverage unique student-athlete stories and emerging trends to increase visibility and fan interest.

  • Ensure consistency in branding, messaging, and visual identity across all Conference communications platforms.

  • Support conference sponsorship, partnership, and promotional initiatives through strategic communications and content integration.

 

Content Creation and Digital Media

 

  • Create, capture, and oversee the production of multimedia content, including written features, photography, graphic design, video, podcasts, and social media assets.

  • Develop content calendars and editorial strategies aligned with the Conference's communications goals.

  • Produce content that engages diverse audiences, including fans, student-athletes, coaches, MPSF alumni, media, and conference stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with member institutions to maximize the reach and impact of conference-related content.

 

Strategic Communications Planning

 

  • In collaboration with MPSF leadership, develop and execute annual communications and media plans.

  • Establish communication priorities, messaging frameworks, and content strategies for conference championships, special events, and major initiatives.

  • Monitor industry trends, emerging platforms, and best practices in collegiate athletics communications.

  • Utilize analytics, audience insights, and performance metrics to evaluate communications effectiveness and guide future strategies.

 

Championship and Event Coverage

 

  • Lead communications operations for MPSF championships and special events.

  • Coordinate media services, content creation, social media coverage, live event storytelling, and post-event communications.

  • Ensure a high-quality and consistent media experience for student-athletes, coaches, institutional representatives, and media members.

  • Event management responsibilities as assigned by the Commissioner.

 

Position Requirements

Education:  Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

 

Experience:  Three to five years of experience in communications, marketing or related fields, in intercollegiate athletics or professional sports.

 

Skills:  Demonstrated ability to work independently. Strong external and interpersonal communication abilities. Leadership skills to effectively manage the expectations of a diverse group of sports coaches. Experience working with championship events. A demonstrated background in communications, sports information and social media. An understanding of media and streaming industry standards.
