Director of Athletics

Midway University has engaged Bechler Leadership in search of its next Director of Athletics. The successful candidate must come with a business mindset and entrepreneurial spirit who can oversee a competitive intercollegiate athletics program with 28 varsity teams in a future-focused, fast-paced, student-centered environment. Midway University holds membership in the NAIA, primarily in the River States Conference. The institution also sponsors a portfolio that includes some non-NAIA sports. Founded in 1847, Midway University provides a career-focused education grounded in the liberal arts to over 2000 students in traditional programs as well as undergraduate and graduate programs for working adults offered in-seat and online. The campus is in Midway, Kentucky and is 14 miles outside Lexington. Midway University has experienced significant enrollment growth since 2016 and has managed several construction and renovation projects without incurring new debt to sustain that growth.

Reporting directly to the President, the Director of Athletics serves on the President’s Advisory Council. The Director of Athletics is responsible for providing visionary leadership for the athletics program that is consistent with the institution’s mission and strategic plan; recruiting and managing the coaching staff; ensuring coaches are meeting roster goals with academically qualified students for enrollment and retention; collaborating with academic and student affairs to monitor student-athletes’ academic progress and conduct; ensuring compliance with all university, national association and conference policies, rules, and regulations; administering the athletic budget; and working closely with the president and advancement office to raise funds for the athletics program.

The successful candidate must have a passion for the mission and values of the institution; be a strategic thinker who can build on a rich institutional history and initiate change through collaboration; be conversant with higher education trends and competition; understand the financial aspects and lean resources of an institution; and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

n order to be considered for the position, applicants must possess (1) a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a Master’s degree preferred, (2) a minimum of 3-5 years of coaching experience with coaching at the collegiate level preferred, (3) a working knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations, (4) significant experience with athletic administration, preferably as a sitting collegiate athletic director, and (5) experience working in a department with large roster expectations.
