The Head Coach is responsible for the administration and organization of a successful track and field and cross-country program that competes in the Centennial Conference at the NCAA DIII level. This includes but is not limited to program administration, practice and game day preparation and coaching, recruitment and retention of student-athletes, supervision of all assistants, and budget management. Proper utilization of facilities and equipment, and scheduling for practices, athletic contests and designated special functions.
Coaching Responsibilities
• Prepare, schedule and organize daily practice sessions, travel schedules, game preparation for competition, off-season training, and devise team rules and expectations
• In coordination with equipment manager, supervise the issuance, care, and inventory of related sports equipment.
• Organize and administer the recruiting of prospective student-athletes in accordance with the NCAA, Centennial Conference, and McDaniel College policies and procedures.
• Submit for approval and administer the sport budget in a fiscally responsible manner, adhering to department and college budget policies
• Assist in the development and enforcement of all NCAA, ECAC, Centennial Conference, institutional and department policies.
• In coordination with the athletic administration, manage team travel including transportation, lodging and meals and submit a travel itinerary before each event.
• Provide general advising, mentoring and support to student-athletes and work to ensure their academic progress and ongoing eligibility, keeping the College’s mission and values in mind.
• Engage in regular consultation with athletic training personnel to implement appropriate risk management strategies and maximize the safety and overall wellness of student-athletes.
• Schedule the use of competition and practice facilities with the department.
• Work collaboratively with institutional advancement and the alumni office to manage all aspects of fundraising
• Execute all of these responsibilities as head coach in a manner that reflects an ongoing commitment to the excellence, integrity and success of the Track & Field program, of the Department of Athletics, and McDaniel College.
• Follow all NCAA, ECAC, Conference, institution and department rules, regulations and policies
• Work collaboratively with the Compliance Officer in regard to adhering to all rules and regulations of the NCAA
• Other duties as assigned by the Director may be required
This position has a budgeted rate of $60,000-$62,000. The position is classified as an AO. The AO salary band for all positions at the college with this classification has a minimum rate of $43,880 and a maximum rate of $93,750. This is a full-time, exempt position.
Qualifications
• Previous college-level coaching experience required
• Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s preferred.
• Successful collegiate track and field coaching experience is preferable
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Knowledge of NCAA Division III and Centennial Conference rules and regulations
• Experience with recruiting and fundraising
• Strong, detail-oriented, organizational skills
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with employees, coaching staff,
student athletes, vendors, alumni and general public
• Ability to manage and supervise staff including training, scheduling, and evaluating
• Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible work week schedule including evenings and weekends.
• Knowledge of basic budgeting and record keeping procedures
• Ability to read and comprehend documents such as instructions, manuals, rulebooks, safety rules, policy standards, student timecards and memos.
• Ability to speak effectively, present information one-to-one and in small group situations.
• Valid driver’s license with two or less points.
