Position Overview
The Director, Athletics Development and Assistant Athletic Director is responsible for providing leadership to major gift fundraising efforts for Marquette Athletics. (S)he must exhibit the highest levels of professionalism and integrity, along with demonstrating communication skills and effectively collaborating with Advancement colleagues, athletics administrators, coaches, and other campus partners. This position has the opportunity to work in a hybrid work arrangement, with time worked both on campus as well as remotely.
Duties and Responsibilities
1.Portfolio & Relationship Management
Manage an individual portfolio of 35-40 major gift prospects, with an emphasis on commitments of $100,000 and greater.
Meet individually with prospects and volunteers. Responsible for making 15 to 20 face-to-face visits per month designed to move prospects toward making philanthropic commitments to MU.
Make personal gift solicitations. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of university priorities, prepare solicitation materials, and conduct strategy meetings.
Actively leverage provided qualification resources to identify, engage, cultivate, and ultimately solicit new prospects.
In partnership with the Be the Difference NIL collective, play a key role in efforts aimed at driving name, image, and likeness (NIL) strategy and revenue for MU student-athletes.
Prepare fundraising briefing materials as needed for senior leadership (e.g. President, VP of Advancement, Athletics Director, etc.).
Work closely with head coaches and staff to achieve sport-specific fundraising goals.
2. Administration & Leadership
Serve as a trusted partner to the AVP, Sr. Assoc. AD, playing a leadership role in the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Advancement team at Marquette.
Coach, develop, and mentor Athletics Advancement teammates who carry portfolios of prospects ranging in giving capacities.
Significantly contribute to the strategic partnership between Marquette Athletics and the Be the Difference NIL collective, establishing Marquette as an NIL leader in the BIG EAST Conference, and on the national stage.
Continuously seek ways to develop relationships across institutional divisions to collaboratively drive philanthropy for MU Athletics. Partner closely with Athletics colleagues in Marketing & Tickets and Athletic Communications on strategic initiatives.
Maintain appropriate contact with prospects and record all contact in the University Advancement prospect management systems.
Actively contribute to Advancement staff meetings, prospect tracking meetings, committee meetings, etc.
Attend and assist in the planning of MU Athletics and Advancement events, select athletic competitions (including home and select road basketball games), and volunteer meetings, often during the evenings and weekends.
3. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required.
A minimum of five years of development-related experience, preferably including fundraising and/or outside sales, volunteer management, strategic planning, and personal solicitation.
Major gift fundraising experience in higher education, preferably in support of an NCAA Division I athletics program.
Proven ability to identify, cultivate, steward, solicit, and close philanthropic gifts of $100,000 and greater.
Experience as part of a team, exhibiting leadership qualities that led to collective success.
Commitment to MU Advancement’s culture focused on service, collaboration, and persistence.
Understanding of NIL and its impact on collegiate athletics.
Experience working with an NIL collective, and a track record of building relationships that drive NIL engagement.
Ability to work within a complex environment, as well as a strong commitment to Marquette’s character as an urban institution, its goals, mission, and Jesuit Catholic tradition.
Familiarity with NCAA and BIG EAST compliance guidelines as related to fundraising and donor relations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Event management experience is ideal.
This role requires the ability to travel and work evenings and weekends.
