Louisiana Tech University is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Associate Athletics Director/Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of academic support for LA Tech student-athletes and will plan and execute strategies designed to strengthen academic support services. This is a full-time, 12-month position that serves on the Senior Leadership Team.
Job Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement academic support services for student-athletes to include advising and counseling on academic and athletic eligibility matters. Develop and coordinate an organized effort to enhance and nurture the relationship between the Academic Success Services program and the student-athletes, coaches and faculty.
- Hire a staff, articulating explicit expectations, providing on-going feedback and mentoring.
- Ensure staff is accessible to student-athletes, particularly in times of substantial academic workload (i.e. advising, registration, final exams, summer orientation).
- Communicate with student-athletes, coaches, and other applicable administrative staff regarding student-athletes’ academic records concerning matriculation, graduation and NCAA eligibility. Responsible for no less than weekly communication with Head Coaches in articulating support strategies for students, updating student performance and progress.
- Lead and oversee the operations, planning, and execution of comprehensive student-athlete engagement programming including student-athlete orientation, community engagement, leadership programming, life skills, career development, and transition to life after sport.
- Develop processes around and provide direction of all mandated student-athlete programming.
- Create and grow key campus and community partnerships in the areas of leadership, life skills training, and career services; leverage existing campus resources and programs to progress student-athletes through the different stages of development. Facilitate career counseling services to include resume/cover letter coaching, interview preparation, etiquette training, and transition resources and services.
- Develop, update and maintain student-athlete policy manual to ensure that expectations, guidelines, and university core values are communicated and provided to all student-athletes.
- Coordinate academic resources to achieve departmental initiatives and benchmarks (e.g. APR, Graduation Rates, NCAA Academic Eligibility, Student Retention, Course Completion and GPA goals).
- Direct oversight for NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) planning. Provide recommendations and share relevant data to achieve annual department goals.
- Oversight of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee; provide leadership and support and conduct monthly SAAC Meetings. Serve as main contact point between the Conference and the student-athlete representatives in regards to Conference initiatives.
- Meet with prospective student-athletes during the academic portion of the recruitment process to disseminate information regarding the Athletic Academic Success Program and general University academic requirements.
- Lead with integrity and assure adherence to NCAA, Conference USA, and University rules and regulations.
- Assist with athletic events and perform other related duties as assigned by the Athletics Director and the Deputy Athletics Director.
Minimum qualifications for the position are:
- Bachelor's degree with at least four (4) years of related experience are required. Master's degree preferred. A diverse understanding of issues that affect NCAA Division I student-athletes and experience working with student-athlete academic/student support services preferred. A successful candidate will possess knowledge of NCAA progress toward degree requirements, the NCAA Academic Performance Program, and graduation success rate and APR calculations.
- Skilled application of the Microsoft Office suite of products. Teamworks experience is a plus.
- Communication skills, both written and oral, are critical.
- Must be detail-oriented, organized, and deadline conscious.
- Must be able to work well with senior and support staff across campus including Departmental Offices, Admissions, Registrar and Student Affairs.
