Assistant Coach, Track and Field
12-Month, Full-Time Position
Knox College and the Department of Athletics seeks an innovative and forward-thinking Assistant Coach for its men and women’s cross country program. The Assistant Cross Country/Track and Field Coach provides assistance to the Head Track Coach with regard to all aspects of the program, but with particular emphasis on throws. The preferred candidate will work with the head coach and other assistants to plan practices, competition strategies, recruiting, retention, budget management, performance evaluation, and program growth, among other responsibilities.
Candidates will embrace work in a fast-paced, team-based environment and will be able to build and sustain relationships with coaches, student-athletes, and staff.
The preferred candidate will have expertise in throwing events and will be expected to responsibly and effectively coach and lead throwers. The assistant coach will develop effective practice plans, competition strategies, and maintain professional relationships with student athletes that will promote a competitively and experientially positive experience.
The assistant coach will demonstrate a knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques associated with track and field, as well as the ability to plan, implement, and evaluate varied events, skill levels, and complex tasks and procedures.
The preferred candidate will be highly organized, professional, outgoing, and engaging across constituencies. They will have excellent communication and supervisory skills. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the head coach and / or the director of athletics.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Oversee specific events and areas of the program
Communicates daily with head coach
Supports the philosophy, vision, and direction as set forth by the head coach
Coordinates recruiting strategies with the head coach
Attends all practices and competitions
Communicates and plans with the head coach practice sessions and competition strategies
Participates with the head coach in team evaluations / assessments
Attends all Midwest Conference, NCAA, and Knox College events, as necessary
Models and instill the values of sportsmanship and fair play to all students. Understands and supports the vision of the athletics department and Knox College
Has a working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
Engages in professional development opportunities
Other duties as assigned by the head coach and / or the director of athletics
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree required
Related work experience, preferably at the NCAA level
Valid Driver’s License
Excellent communications skills and ability to work well with others
Ability to maintain appropriate discretion / confidentiality, as needed
Commitment to unwavering integrity
Must be able to work nights and weekends in varying climates
