Director of Sports Marketing and Fan Engagement

Job description:  

The Director of Sports Marketing and Fan Engagement leads the vision, strategy, and execution of comprehensive marketing, branding, and fan experience initiatives for Hampton Pirates Athletics. This role is responsible for developing and implementing innovative approaches that drive attendance, enhance fan engagement, grow the department brand, and support revenue generation through ticket sales, sponsorships, promotions, and digital engagement across all varsity athletics.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

·         Develop and implement department-wide marketing strategies that support athletics goals, increase visibility, and strengthen the Hampton Pirates brand locally, regionally, and nationally.

·         Lead cross-channel marketing campaigns (social, email, digital advertising, grassroots outreach) to maximize ticket sales, event attendance, and fan engagement.

  • Design and oversee fan engagement initiatives, including theme nights, promotional activities, giveaways, interactive experiences, and game-day entertainment.

  • Collaborate with sport-specific staff to create compelling game day presentations, scripts, videoboard content, and in-stadium programming.

  • Ensure each home event delivers a dynamic and memorable experience for students, alumni, families, and community fans.

  • Build partnerships with campus departments, local schools, community organizations, and media outlets to enhance outreach and broaden the athletics fan base.

  • Represent Hampton University Athletics at events and networking opportunities to strengthen community connections.

  • Supervise, mentor, and train staff, interns, and student workers involved in marketing, promotions, and fan engagement duties.

 

Required Qualifications

 

·         Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Sports Management, Communications, Business, or related field.

·         Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in sports marketing, fan engagement, or related roles; collegiate athletics experience preferred.

·         Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.

·         Demonstrated experience creating successful marketing campaigns and fan initiatives.

·         Proficiency in digital marketing tools, CRM/email platforms, and analytics

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

·         Strong strategic and creative thinker with the ability to translate vision into action.

·         Excellent communication skills (written, oral, presentation).

·         Proficient in digital marketing tools, social media platforms, analytics, and content creation.

·         Exceptional interpersonal skills — able to build relationships with internal units, external partners, and diverse audiences.

·         Strong project management, prioritization, and organizational skills.

·         Commitment to enhancing the student-athlete and fan experience.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

·         This position requires frequent evening and weekend work, including travel to select events, recruiting functions, and community engagements.
