Assistant Football Coach - Defense

This position is responsible for all phases of the program including organization and administration, quality student-athlete development and recruitment, fiscal management, viable fund raising and public relations, and other duties as assigned by the Head Football Coach.

Salary & Benefits: 

Minimum starting salary of $42,000, commensurate with experience.

Primary Duties: 

  • Assist in the development of game strategies, create practice plans, and provide on-field instruction to players.

  • Coach players individually and in groups, monitor academic progress, and ensure athletes meet conduct and culture standards.

  • Identify, evaluate, and recruit talented student-athletes who meet the university's academic and athletic requirements

  • Assist with camp coordination and other program fundraising needs.

  • Ensure the program adheres to all NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations.

  • Serve as a GVSU ambassador, engage with media, and participate in fundraising and community events.

  • Perform other duties as required/assigned by leadership.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree.

  • Experience recruiting and coaching at the collegiate or equivalent level.

  • A thorough understanding of and accountability to NCAA rules and regulations.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the academic and athletic success of the student-athletes and NCAA compliance with the highest ethical standards.

  • Driving a company/university vehicle may be required. A valid driver’s license is a requirement and a MVR needs to be conducted upon hire.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Experience coaching a defensive position (LB's or DB's preferred) 

  • Experience coordinating a defensive unit.  

  • Experience coaching a special teams unit or coordinating special teams.


Working Conditions: 

Normal office environment. Nights, weekends and travel are required.
