Assistant Softball Coach

The assistant coach for softball is responsible for assisting the head softball coach in implementing and directing all phases of a competitive NCAA Division III Softball program at DePauw University. This includes recruiting quality student-athletes, organizing and planning practices and game strategies, scouting, coaching, scheduling, budgeting and planning team travel in compliance with University, conference and NCAA rules and regulations.

Another responsibility within the athletics department will be assigned.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Understand and comply with NCAA Division III, conference and University rules and regulations.  Demonstrate sportsmanship and ethical conduct.

  • Along with the head coach, develop and implement plans and strategies for practices and competition which result in athletics success.

  • Mentor student-athletes to ensure athletics and academic success.

  • As directed by the head coach, schedule competition, make transportation and lodging arrangements for team travel

  • Administer a fiscally sound athletics program.

  • Along with the head coach, evaluate program effectiveness.

  • Monitor student-athletes’ academic progression.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and/or head Softball coach.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Bachelor’s degree required.  Master’s degree preferred.
 

Experience: Collegiate coaching and playing experience in softball is highly desirable.  Experience coaching pitchers is highly desirable.

Computer Skills:  Teamworks, Microsoft Office Suite, Internet, Google Apps, other programs as determined by specific sport responsibilities.

Certificates & Licenses:  A valid US driver’s license is required.  Certification in first aid, CPR and AED must be current at all times.

Communication/Language: Intermediate: Ability to read and interpret documents. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Other Physical Demands:

During the playing and practice season (generally 18 - 30 weeks in a 52 week period), when this individual’s primary responsibility is coaching a sport, the coach will stand/walk/sit for 3-6 hours per day at practice, perform office tasks (meet with student-athletes and colleagues and respond to correspondence) for 5 hours per day, and on the phone and computer (primarily recruiting) 1-2 hours per day.

Outside of the playing and practice season or on days in which there is not scheduled practice or competition, the coach will sit 5 hours per day, walk/stand the remainder of the day, and conduct business both in-person and on the phone.

They must be able to enact the emergency action plan at practice and competition, supervise students on day and overnight travel, and organize/manage travel plans for themself and the team.

A coach is required to create and respond to correspondence (email and Microsoft office/Google docs) and maintain electronic recruiting records. 

They must be able to provide basic demonstrations of skills and tactics, describe any modifications they are unable to demonstrate, apply appropriate game rules to the teaching and practicing and monitor for safety while coaching. 

They must be able to recruit student-athletes, which requires phone calls and traveling off-campus, and evaluating written, oral and digital information from prospective student-athletes, and interact with outside interests in the form of DePauw alumni, high school coaches, club team coaches, and parents during the recruitment of student athletes. The coach must interact with colleagues from Admissions to ensure effective visits by prospective student athletes, which includes scheduling their student athletes for host training, securing hosts, and coordinating communication between themselves, the admissions office and the prospective student athlete.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Coaching work is conducted in a traditional office environment as well as inside and outside in athletics and recreational facilities.  Ambient temperature, humidity and extreme heat or cold may be present.
