Senior Associate Athletics Director for Finance & Administration/Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Financial executive with expertise in athletics administration, financial management, reporting, and compliance, as well as strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills. This position will serve on (Dartmouth College Athletics and Recreation) DCARD’s Leadership Team.

Financial Management (35%)

  • Oversees all fiscal operations within Athletics, including 35 varsity sports, 35 club sports, 24 intramural sports, and multiple revenue generating facilities.

  • With input from the Athletic Director, program directors and coaches, prepares and oversees the annual operating budget of over $35M including endowment income, reserves, departmental revenue, and college funding.

  • Monitors resource allocation and prepares financial forecasts and revenue and/or expense to resolve financial problems as they develop and ensures attainment of expected year-end results and goals.

  • Provides financial reports and counsels coaches and administrators regarding status of accounts; recommends strategic and tactical changes required to avoid budget deficits; identifies areas where funds can be re-allocated to meet priorities.

  • Oversees fiscal year-end closing process and recommends closing adjustments and executes these adjustments at the direction of the Athletic Director (AD) or designee.

Budget Planning and Analysis (35%)

  • Serves as liaison, along with the Deputy AD for Business Strategy & Operations, with the President’s Office and Central Finance on matters involving operating and capital budgets. Communicates and implements college fiscal policies and controls throughout DCARD.

  • Leads the development and oversight of a comprehensive budgetary process for all sports and business units to support the short-term and long-term needs of DCARD.

  • Collaborates with departmental leaders, coaches, and staff to establish budget targets, prioritizes funding sources, and aligns expenditures with strategic objectives.

  • Provides monthly budget reports, financial analysis, and forecasting support to inform decision-making processes and identify opportunities for cost savings and revenue enhancement.

  • Works directly with the Deputy AD for Business Strategy & Operations and Associate AD for Facilities and Events to develop annual capital budget.

  • Works with the AD and other leaders facilitates on the annual budget re-allocation process of resources among all departments. Advocates for department where needed.

  • Directs the development and coordination of long-term financial/strategic planning activities for Athletics. Develops strategies to maximize financial resources to meet Athletics and division objectives.

  • Maintains effective working relationships with fiscal officers across the institution, including the Finance Center, Budget, Investment and Controller's offices.

  • Serves on college-wide committees and ad hoc working groups.

Financial Reporting and Compliance (15%)

  • Ensure compliance with institutional, NCAA regulations, and other governing bodies’ requirements related to financial reporting, accounting standards, and fiscal management.

  • Prepares all outgoing financial reports as required by Federal Department of Education (EADA), NCAA, and other external stakeholders as required.

  • Works closely with Athletic Compliance, Audit, and Risk Management to assure that we adhere with College & Ivy League/NCAA regulations and procedures.

 

Human Resource Management (10%)

  • Collaborates closely with DCARD’s HR Business Partner (HRBP) on all payroll/hiring actions within DCARD to ensure conformity with financial and organizational plans.

  • Coordinates the annual performance evaluation process for both administrative and support staff in the Finance Office.

  • Advises the Athletic Director regarding the distribution of compensation increment pools and identifies funding sources for compensation dollars.

 

Varsity Sport Administration (5%)

If determined by Director of Athletics and Recreation, this position may include varsity sport administration oversight. Sport oversight responsibilities and duties for teams include, but not limited to, supervision and evaluation of coaches, scheduling, budget development, evaluation of program resources and performance goals, strategic planning and management of student-athlete grievances and issues.
