Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

California State University, Bakersfield is seeking an Assistant Director of Athletic Communications to join its NCAA Division I Athletics Communications team. This position supports the promotion of Roadrunner Athletics by serving as the primary communications contact for assigned sports and assisting with media relations, digital communications, social media, website management, statistical reporting, and game-day operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary athletics communications contact for assigned sports.

  • Create and distribute press releases, feature stories, game recaps, newsletters, and other communications.

  • Manage and update assigned team pages on the athletics website, including schedules, rosters, biographies, statistics, and related content.

  • Develop and coordinate social media and digital communications to promote assigned teams and athletic events.

  • Maintain sports information files, historical records, statistical reports, game notes, and publications.

  • Coordinate media relations activities, including responding to media inquiries, arranging interviews, and monitoring media coverage.

  • Assist with photography, videography, and digital content creation in collaboration with the Athletics External team.

  • Prepare game-day materials, including statistics packets, media guides, flip cards, and other communications resources.

  • Compile and distribute live statistics using NCAA-approved statistical software.

  • Support live broadcasts and streaming productions by providing statistical information, rosters, pronunciation guides, and other reference materials.

  • Assist with postgame reporting and timely submission of statistics and required reports to the NCAA, conference office, and media outlets.

  • Provide work direction to student assistants, interns, and game-day staff supporting athletics communications.

  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, university, branding, and communications standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn athletics communications software and university systems.

  • Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in athletic communications, sports information, or media relations within collegiate or professional athletics (Division I preferred).

  • Experience writing press releases, feature stories, game recaps, and other athletics communications materials using AP Style.

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, SIDEARM Sports, Genius NCAA Live Stats, StatCrew, and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Knowledge of NCAA rules, conference policies, and athletics communications best practices.

This is a full-time, 12-month, on-site position located in Bakersfield, California. Evening, weekend, holiday, and travel responsibilities are required based on the athletics competition schedule.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,570-$4,850 per month, commensurate with experience, education, skills, and training.
