Job Summary:
The Assistant Coach, Men's Club Varsity Crew will serve the primary function of day-to-day coaching of student-athletes participating in the men's freshman/novice rowing program. The position reports directly to the Head Coach of Men's Club Varsity Crew, with oversight by the Associate Athletic Director of Recreation Services. The Assistant Men's Crew Coach will keep the Head Coach aware of progress and issues related to the freshman/novice crews, and this person will assist the Head Coach as necessary with scheduling, maintenance, preparation, and event management issues for all team activities. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to: coaching student-athletes; recruiting both on and off-campus; upholding all rules and regulations; and assisting in other areas as assigned. The position will require travel with the team to and from regattas, winter and spring training trips, and all team functions.
Job Duties:
Coaching Duties
Schedule and conduct regular practice sessions in and out of season as allowed. Coach the team during scheduled events. Determine and implement the strategies necessary to motivate the team to maximum levels of individual and team performance. Maintain all team equipment, including but not limited to shells, oars, launches, team issued gear, etc. Maintain continuing and thorough familiarity with all applicable NCAA rules and the rules and regulations of Bucknell University, and be responsible for compliance with all NCAA rules. Work with proper departmental personnel in regard to all arrangements for team travel, practice, and competition. Assist in the communication and enforcement of rules and regulations regarding student conduct, appearance, and behavior. Participate in any and all fundraising activities as assigned by the Head Coach or Associate Athletic Director of Recreation Services. Develop a positive working arrangement with all support offices both in the department and on campus (i.e. Sports Information, Admissions, and University Relations). Assist in communicating regularly with alumni, parents, and friends of the program. Develop an effective working relationship with the Bison Crew Association (BCA) leadership and work cooperatively with the BCA to advance the men's crew program. (75%)
Recruiting
Scout and recruit quality student-athletes and coordinate all recruiting activities with the Associate Athletic Director of Recreation Services. Develop a working relationship with the faculty and University staff to assist in the recruiting process. (10%)
Student Services
Demonstrate an active interest in the academic progress of student-athletes. Work closely with all appropriate University personnel to assure academic success of student-athletes. Provide individual counseling to student-athletes when appropriate and direct the student-athlete to professional staff when needed. Assist in enforcement of departmental policies on study programs and require class attendance and completion of work missed due to team competition. Teach learn to row classes as needed. (10%)
Professional Development
Develop a comprehensive and functional knowledge of the sport while actively seeking new methods and strategies. Demonstrate a cooperative attitude toward all other sports programs, intramural programs, and other functions of the University and the department. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree
2. Maintain an up-to-date CPR and First Aid certification
3. Valid US Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications:
1. One to three years of experience coaching high school, club, or collegiate rowing or participated in the
sport on a collegiate or national level.
2. Ability to direct, manage, and perform detailed work with accuracy under time pressures.
3. Strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills combined with the ability to
collaborate effectively with colleagues and student-athletes having a range of backgrounds, interests,
and perspectives.
Physical Demands:
1. Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust,
fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
2. Moderate physical activity. Requires handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds. Requires
standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.
