Athletics Communications Officer

Brown University Athletics and Recreation is seeking candidates for the Athletics Communications Officer position. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, and a member of the Ivy League, our intercollegiate athletics program consists of 38 varsity teams with approximately 1,000 athletes who participate within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA-DI).

The Communications Officer is a member of the division’s external staff and will tell the Brown University Athletics story by managing an integrated athletics and communications program that includes game-day coverage, sports information and statistics, web coordination, social media management, and photography (incl. freelance) for a variety of Brown’s 38 varsity teams, and related Athletics events.

Education and Experience

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Sports Management, or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE

  • One to three (1-3) years of working in sports-related public relations/social media and/or digital media with a proven record of progressive approach to social and digital media.

  • Strong knowledge of creative storytelling experience.

  • One to two (1-2) years of experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe After Effects finalization are required.

  • Demonstrated skill in social media content generation, skill in interpersonal communication, collaboration, and prioritization of work assignments required.

  • Experience in working with deadlines and turning around high-quality projects from point of inception to finalization of production on a day-to-day basis.

  • Strong knowledge of AP Style writing, sports statistics, interviewing techniques, and managing brand reputation during high-pressure communication situations.

  • Hands-on skill operating live-statting software (e.g., NCAA LiveStats, StatCrew) across multiple sports.

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro) to independently produce media guides, game-day graphics, and video highlights.

  • Skill in managing athletic Content Management Systems (e.g., SIDEARM Sports) and executing strategic campaigns across X, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

  • Ability to maintain accuracy, composure, and speed when working under tight game-day deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain productive, positive rapport with student-athletes, coaches, athletic staff, and members of the media.

  • Willingness and stamina to work non-traditional hours, including extensive evenings, weekends, and holidays aligned with athletic schedules.

  • Capacity to travel with athletic teams for away games and tournaments as required.

All division employees are required to demonstrate exemplary ethical conduct and conformance to NCAA rules and regulations; the duties of the position are to be performed in compliance with all NCAA, Ivy League rules and regulations; and any rules violations on behalf of themselves or any knowledge of violations within the division are to be reported to the compliance office and appropriate parties. Employees in coaching positions must receive annual rules education on NCAA legislation related to recruiting by the compliance office and maintain current AED/CPR and First Aid certification (certification is available at no cost through the Division).
