Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Services

Summary

 

This position works with the Student-Athlete Services team to provide academic support to assigned teams. They also assists coaches, athletic administrators, university administrators, and faculty with any and all concerns as they relate to the academic needs and overall development of the student-athlete.

 

Essential Functions

 

  • Coordinate and manage the academic support program/services for all BGSU NCAA Division I teams. This includes, but is not limited to: coordinating one-on-one mentor/advising meetings with all first-year students and students determined to need additional support and mentoring for weekly in-person/virtual meetings regarding student-athletes’ academic progress; monitoring student-athletes’ continuing eligibility, satisfactory academic progress, and graduation plan; recommend effective learning strategies to enhance student-athletes’ academic skill set; communicating with coaching staff, Associate AD for Student-Athlete Services, and sport supervisor(s) on a regular basis; assist student-athletes with course selection and registration; Assists with the oversight of Registration and enrollment process with the Registrars office (priority registration/holds, degree audit software, etc.). Tutor coordination/liaison to the learning commons. Summer Bridge Program coordinator. Oversee travel letter process and correspondence. Athletics liaison to campus Advising community, Faculty, Registration and records, Transfer Evaluation Services, Accessibility Services. Monitor student-athletes with diagnosed learning disabilities & differences, and assist with accessing accommodations approved through the Office of Accessibility Services.

  • Serve as lead academic coordinator for multiple sports teams as determined by the Associate AD for Student-Athlete Services.

  • Assists in the development of programming for student-athletes including Name, Image & Likeness, Diversity & Belonging, Career preparedness, Title IX and Hazing Prevention education

  • Manage the departments responsibility in the certification process by communicating NCAA and conference rules and regulations on satisfactory progress and eligibility of student-athletes; with college academic advisors, coaching staff, athletic administrators, athletic compliance office, Registrars Office and the NCAA faculty athletic representative.  Including maintaining records as related to continuing eligibility for BGSU, the MAC, the CCHA and NCAA.

  • Assist the sport programs in talking with prospective student-athletes, parents, and/or guardians about the SAS provided at BGSU at scheduled recruiting functions. May include nights and weekends.

  • Represent the Office of Student-Athlete Services on University Committees, and communicate NCAA, MAC, CCHA, rules and regulations on satisfactory progress and eligibility with college academic advisors and support staff. Address university staff and faculty members concerns related to student-athlete issues.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

The following Degree is required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Degree must be conferred at the time of application.

The following Degree is preferred:

  • Master’s Degree preferred in counseling, education, sport management, college student personnel, or a related field.  

The following Experience is required:

  • 2 years of progressive experience in athletics, guidance and counseling, higher education or a related field. 
    • 2 years of graduate assistantship equals 1 year of professional experience

The following Experience is preferred: 

  • Previous experience supervising Athletic Academic Advising (or Advisors) or working with Student-Athlete Services preferred.

The following Licensure, Certifications, or Registration is required:

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and comply with the University’s vehicle use policy.
