The Big 12 Conference is searching for a Senior Director - Communications. This individual will be the day-to-day contact for Big 12 football, crafting and executing a robust media strategy to shape and grow the conference’s football narrative on and off the field. Additionally, this individual will assist the Vice President - Communications in all executive and strategic communications initiatives, as well as management and oversight of select communications staff.
The ideal candidate is someone with robust experience crafting and executing an evolved, contemporary communications strategy at the collegiate or professional level. This individual must be able to storytell at a national and local level and must ensure Big 12 messaging is diligently crafted and communicated.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the day-to-day contact for Big 12 Football and a select Olympic sport. Additionally, this individual will support the Vice President - Communications in oversight of communications duties of select Big 12 sports.
Generate strategic, year-round media coverage for the Big 12 Conference and its institutions across a variety of sports, business, and entertainment outlets.
Cultivate relationships with a vast array of national, local and trade reporters, prioritizing media relations across the sports and entertainment media landscape.
Serve as a secondary spokesperson for the Commissioner and Big 12 leadership.
Work alongside the Chief Football & Competition Officer to project manage a variety of football-specific initiatives and events, including Football Media Days, Big 12 Football Championship, Big 12 Pro Day, and more.
Work alongside Chief Marketing Officer and Associate Vice President – Brand to serve as a communications aide on a variety of marketing and branding initiatives.
Serve as a communications resource for all Big 12 leadership across multiple sectors.
Complete additional tasks as assigned.
Desired Skills and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
Minimum 7+ years of experience in professional sports, collegiate athletic media relations, or a related field.
A proactive, aggressive, and contemporary approach to sports storytelling and strategic communications.
A vast understanding of today’s sports media landscape, with a deep rolodex of media contacts.
Superior writing, editing and interpersonal communications skills.
Deep knowledge of football / college athletics both on and off the field.
Strong understanding of the role digital / social media plays in today’s media landscape, and an ability to craft communications strategies that reflect that understanding.
Ability to develop and maintain relationships with Big 12 Athletic Directors, senior administration leadership, coaches, student-athletes, and more.
Proficiency in NCAA Genius Live Stats and StatCrew OR a similar statistical software utilized at the professional level.
Ability to be project manager, problem solver, multitasker and decision marker.
Ability to work flexible, non-traditional hours including gamedays, evenings, weekends and holidays.
Travel required to select Big 12 sporting events, Championships, Conference meetings, and more.
Experience working in a fast-paced and hands-on environment while juggling multiple projects at once and maintaining organization of projects.
