Job Description

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
• Dean of Athletics and/or Assistant Athletic Director

POSITIONS REPORTING TO THIS POSITION: YES
• Assistant coaches
• Student workers as approved

FLSA STATUS:
• Administrative, exempt-level, full-time, 12-month, employment-at-will position

PURPOSE:
• This position, under general supervision, independently performs and is responsible for
running a safe, enthusiastic sports program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Administration of all phases of an NAIA sports program, including recruiting qualified
student-athletes.
• Adhere to the College recruitment scholarship model.
• Lead, support, and prioritize student retention and persistence to graduation.
• Create and foster a positive environment of growth, development, and support for student-athletes, both in and out of the sport. Negative, demeaning, and derogatory coaching and
communication tactics will not be tolerated.
• Formulate the team’s competitive schedule.
• Organize and train student-athletes for successful and safe competition.
• Participate in clinics, workshops, etc., to stay abreast of current trends and methods and
contribute to professional development and self-improvement.
• Adhere to college, KCAC, and NAIA policies and procedures.
• Foster cooperative working relationships with the immediate supervisor and any staff or
team members associated with the program.
• Cooperate with other coaches to provide the optimum sports program possible under
existing conditions.
• Adhere to all College spending policies and procedures.
• Effectively prepare, spend, and manage the budget and records for the team.
• Actively lead fundraising efforts for the sports program, as well as for the Department of
Athletics.
• Prepare timely and accurate documents, such as travel expense statements, itineraries, etc.
• Take the initiative to provide new ideas and concepts to improve the efficiency and
productivity of the staff.
• Support the Department of Athletics mission, vision, and values.
• Monitor and support the academic success of student-athletes.
• Lead community engagement and service-learning opportunities within the sports program.
• Plan and conduct pre- and post-season conditioning and training programs.
• Plan and lead pre- and post-season individual meetings with student-athletes to discuss
progress, development, and goals.
• Arrange team travel and meals.
• Approve any stipends to assistant coaches.
• Oversee the safety conditions of the facility or area where the sport is conducted.
• Coordinate visits by recruits and their families.
• Prepare an inventory of all equipment at the end of the season.
• General upkeep and protection of equipment under the jurisdiction of the program.
• Write at the end of the season an annual report evaluating the program with
recommendations for improvements.
• Carry out other related administrative duties as directed by the Dean of Athletics and
Assistant Athletic Director.
• Participate in staff and team meetings, providing input and suggestions.
• Provide continual evaluation of processes and procedures. Responsible for suggesting
improvements in area operations, efficiency, and service to internal and external customers.
Work in collaboration and cooperation with other departments and academic divisions on
campus, using timely and appropriate judgment in upward communication regarding
department concerns and responsibilities

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Must know KCAC and NAIA policies and procedures.
• Bachelor’s degree, Master's preferred.
• A results-oriented candidate who can handle multiple projects/assignments concurrently,  
works well independently and fosters a team environment.
• This position rewards a good organizational fit.
• Flexible schedule and travel required.
• Ability to communicate effectively to various audiences, including students, parents, faculty,
staff, alumni, administration, and the community.
• Ability to handle multiple projects/assignments concurrently and be very results-oriented.
• Highly motivated and works well both independently and in a team environment.

COMPUTER COMPETENCIES:
• Functional knowledge of Microsoft Windows
• Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Basic personal computer operation
• Willingness to adapt to a changing technology environment, i.e. updates, security, and new
versions
• Ability to use multiple Internet browsers
• Competent in email and document management

PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to
perform the essential functions of this job successfully. Reasonable accommodations may be

need to sit or stand as needed. It may require walking primarily on a level surface for periodic
periods throughout the day and reaching above shoulder height, below the waist, or lifting as
required to file documents or store materials throughout the workday. Proper lifting techniques
are required. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including
the ability to grasp and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment, and read technical
information.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating
dangerous equipment or working with chemicals, but includes exposure to biological hazards,
bacteria, and communicable diseases. Work outside involves considerable exposure to unusual
elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or
loud noises. Frequent conference-wide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours. Work
performed indoors is generally with ambient room temperatures, lighting and traditional office
equipment as found in a typical office environment.

TRAVEL: Travel is required by the team schedule, as determined by the coaching staff, the Dean
of Athletics, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), and the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
