Description:

The title for this role will match the candidates’ level of experience.

Under supervision of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Success/SWA, the Assistant Athletic Director or Director of Academic Success is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of comprehensive academic support programs and services for Belmont’s NCAA Division 1 student-athletes.

  1. Provides leadership and operational management of academic support services for student-athletes, developing and implementing policies and procedures relative to academic support and providing guidance and supervision to staff. Provides academic advising and support to assigned teams.

  2. Monitors the academic progress of student-athletes to ensure compliance with NCAA, Conference, and University eligibility requirements and to achieve graduation goals. Develop and review degree plans and work closely with college academic advisors to monitor degree progress. 

  3. Prepares unofficial admissibility and eligibility assessments of prospective student-athlete records, including transfers; works cooperatively with university departments to obtain course evaluations for domestic and international students.  

  4. Meet with prospective student-athletes and their families during campus visits, as requested by the coaching staffs. 

  5. Compiles data relative to student-athlete success for purposes of internal and external reporting, eligibility reviews and certification, as well as the promotion of Belmont’s student-athletes on a local, regional, and national level. 

  6. Welcomes new student-athletes during Summer Orientation, communicating with each of them prior to orientation and assisting with academic advising and their transition to Belmont.

  7. Evaluates the effectiveness of academic support services and student-athlete programming through measures such as eligibility, retention, and timely graduation, as well as student-athlete assessments.

Education: Bachelor's degree required; master’s degree preferred.

Experience: One to three required, four to six preferred years of directly related, progressively responsible experience in academic support services and intercollegiate athletics administration.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):

  • Knowledge of academic standards of recruitment, admissions, retention, and curriculum/graduation requirements, as well as knowledge of support services available to students.

  • Strong leadership ability, flexibility, and ability to manage multiple tasks while prioritizing record-keeping skills.

  • Has an understanding of the technical and tactical needs of a team and commitment to the NCAA Division 1 philosophy and the role of Athletics within a private University.

  • Knowledge of policies and legislation relative to student records (including NCAA compliance and academic eligibility requirements, FERPA, and HIPAA laws).

  • Knowledge of institutional academic database and software systems, including Banner, Argos, and DegreeWorks preferred.

  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment. 

  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.

  • Skilled in communicating on a personal level, listening, assimilating, and evaluating information.

  • Thrives in an environment of teamwork, collaboration, and hard work.

  • Ability to work extended hours, including games and events on evenings and weekends, as needed.
