Director, Marketing & Fan Engagement

Summary

This position is part of the team responsible for all entertainment aspects of event planning and show production for Army West Point Athletics Association Inc. (“AWPAA”) home games and events held at the United States Military Academy at West Point (“USMA”). The primary focus will be to create life-long memories for all fans who attend. Reporting to the Assistant Athletic Director, Marketing & Fan Engagement, this position will assist in every aspect of AWPAA  home games and events and the development and execution of strategic plans enhancing brand awareness, ticket sales, fan/game experience and other revenue generating initiatives. The ideal candidate should have a visionary, imaginative, and forward-thinking mindset while being eager to learn. This position will be the primary marketing contact for Men’s Lacrosse and Women’s Basketball and will serve as the secondary contact for Football.

 

Scope of Impact

The Director’s scope of impact will be high due to this position being externally facing towards USMA, the U.S. Army Garrison West Point, the United States Army, and its fans and constituents. This position will interface and collaborate with several Academy departments to promote Army West Point Athletics and to further fan engagement. These areas include but are not limited to:

  • Spirit Support Group
  • Glee Club
  • Pipes and Drums
  • Cadet Band
  • Parachute Team
  • Public Affairs Office
  • Protocol
  • Color Guard

 

Level of Decision Making

The level of decision making for this position is moderate. This position will be given autonomy overall marketing and fan engagement initiatives including but not limited to marketing plans, run of shows, scripts, videoboard elements for assigned sports, and ensuring brand standards are maintained and initiatives contribute to the overall strategic plan set forth by the Assistant Athletic Director, Marketing and Fan Engagement. This position will collaborate with other members of the external unit to determine best practices and procedures as it relates to Men's Lacrosse, Women’s Basketball, marketing internship, and marketing assets. This position will be able to directly interface with head coaches, sports administrators, and other external team members to determine best practices and procedures for assigned sports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

30% Primary Marketing for Men’s Lacrosse and Women’s Basketball 

  • Develop and execute marketing promotions and game presentation plans to increase attendance, generate revenue, maximize the game-day fan experience, and assist with sponsorship development and fulfillment for Men’s Lacrosse and Women’s Basketball. These responsibilities include but not limited to:
    1. Leading sport specific external meetings;
    2. Working with coaches and team operations staff;
    3. Developing run of show and public address scripts;
    4. Collaborating with the group sales staff on group experiences and promotions; and
    5. Collaborating with sponsorship group on sponsored initiatives and fulfillment.

20% Secondary Marketing for Football and Other Assigned Sports 

Football:

  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and management of the pregame fan fest, Black Knights Alley.
  • Serve as the on-field game presentation manager for all home football games and Army-Navy Games at which Army is designated as the home team.
  • Serve on the Army-Air Force steering and Army-Navy planning committees.

Other Assigned Sports:

  • Responsible for the execution of game presentation for all assigned home games including but not limited to music, in-game promotions, halftime acts, and recognitions.

20% Primary Athletics Marketing Liaison to the United States Corps of Cadets 

  • Responsible for contacting the USCC to request military assets at various home sporting events.
  • Responsible for setting up continuous meetings with USCC and AWPAA departments to coordinate requested military assets.
  • Responsible for overseeing game-day execution of requested military assets.

10% Secondary Marketing Contact for the Marketing Internship Program 

  • Work in coordination with the Assistant Director, Marketing & Fan Engagement in the recruitment and advertising of the internship program.
  • Assist the Assistant Director, Marketing & Fan Engagement in the training and scheduling of interns.

10% Oversees Marketing Assets & Inventory 

  • Responsible for the management and maintenance of all marketing equipment
  • Responsible for the management of all marketing promotional materials
  • Responsible for inventory management and distribution of marketing collateral

10% Other Duties as Assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Level of supervision is moderate. This position will have a direct report, Assistant Director, Marketing & Fan Engagement.

  • Provide direction and guidance on day-to-day work.
  • Implement monthly meetings to promote career development.

 

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

Perform duties in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment.

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary or active position for 50% of the time.
  • Occasionally moves boxes weighing up to up to 30 lbs. 
  • The person in this position frequently communicates with team members and USMA staff and vendors. 
  • Occasionally works in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

 

Travel 

5-10% - Travel will be based on the nature of the team’s schedule (i.e., championship tournament, service academy games, etc.) and on the need for assistance for home events.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management, Marketing, or related field; a combination of education and relevant experience may substitute.
  • 1-3+ years in athletic administration or related fields. Previous experience in administrative roles within athletic departments or relevant organizations is advantageous.
  • Experience supervising game day staff and interns.
  • Experience using Daktronics, ShoFlo, Sound Director, and other software.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud specifically: Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects.
  • Familiarity with the Army West Point brand.
  • Knowledge of NCAA, American Athletic Conference, and Patriot League rules and regulations.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a group setting and demonstrate good judgement skills.

 

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.
  • Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including a willingness to submit to a background screen.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

 

Pay Range

$50,000 - $55,000

This job posting contains a pay range, which represents the range of salaries that AWPAA believes, in good faith, at the time of this posting that it might be willing to pay for the posted position. AWPAA expects to hire for this position near the middle of the range. Only in truly rare and exceptional circumstances, where an external candidate has experience, credentials or expertise that far exceed those required or expected for the position, would AWPAA consider paying a salary or rate near the higher end of the range.
