Head Athletic Trainer

Job Summary

The Head Athletic Trainer is responsible for the care, prevention, management, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic related injuries and illnesses of Albany State University student-athletes for all 13 sport programs and cheerleading. The Head Athletic Trainer will work directly with sport administration, coaches, physicians, sports, dietitians, strength & conditioning personnel and university health center to deliver comprehensive healthcare and wellness 1 services for Albany State University student-athletes. The Head Athletic Trainer will have a wide range of clinic and administrative responsibilities which include prevention, evaluation, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of student-athletes; pre-participation physicals; inventory management of supplies and equipment; maintaining medical records; completing required insurance claims; daily interaction, communication, and relationship building with coaching, strength and conditioning coaches, physicians, athletic training staff and athletics administration; attending team practices and events; In addition, the position is responsible for the supervision of one full-time Athletic Trainer and three Graduate Assistants.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates, assesses, and treats athletic injuries by developing and implementing preventative and rehabilitative programs.

  • Coordinates, schedules, and provides supervision of daily practices and game travel as permitted by NCAA rules and regulations.

  • Maintains appropriate record keeping and documentation of training room records of injuries, treatment plans and progress notes.

  • Serves as a liaison between team physician, coaches, and student-athletes in order to provide the best treatment for the student athlete and ensure a timely but safe return to sports. Organizes and performs annual physicals on all athletes.

  • Manages inventory and purchasing of medical supplies and equipment while maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities along with annual calibrations.

  • Performs administrative tasks and negotiates contracts for secondary insurance and team physician. Updates and implements policies consistent with NCAA and NATA.

  • Serves as CPR instructor to maintain coaches¿ and staff members¿ certifications as required by NCAA.

  • Organizes and performs drug testing for institutional and NCAA compliance. Oversees student athletic trainers. Handles insurance medical claims for athletes. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's Degree in athletic training, exercise science, sports or health care, or other related field required.

Minimum of three (3) years related experience in high school, intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics.

Certified Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).

Eligible for certification with the Georgia Board of Athletic Trainers

1 year of experience operating a personal computer and associated software like Excel, Word, and Outlook

Preferred Qualifications

Working knowledge of electronic medical record system 

CPR/First Aid Instructor 

Proficiency with manual therapy
